Battery dead for good?

Well, a few days ago I had replace my dead alternator with a new one 1988 2nd Gen Alternator. So, all my electrical weir problems are gone. However, the car was driving for a 1 or 2 with a dead alternator. After replacing it I notices that is going lower the voltage on the batter. Right now is one line before the number 8 on the Rx7 Battery Voltage metter. Today when I turn it off it was dead and I was force to jump start it with someone else car. I put some water on the battery since it was low but I see no charge yet. How long should I leave the car runing to charge the battery? If it dosen't charge is my battery officialy dead?

So even with the car running, the voltmeter reads low? Sure the alt is charging? Everything connected okay? Sometimes when batteries get discharged and left that way for awhile, it can make the battery loose the ability to be recharged. Even a battery if the battery wasn't holding a charge, the voltmeter should still read ~13-14v when running.

First, you need to run the engine above 2K to make sure the alternator can push the max charge to the battery. I usually go out for a drive for about 1/2 hour and that will charge a good battery completely. If thats not happening, check to make sure your charging system is working. Use a DVM and the FSM procedure to check the charging system.

If the battery is more than 4 years old and it gets discharged completely a few times it will more than likely fail in a short period of time. I've experienced this enough times to replace my betteries every 5 years as most of them only last that long, especially if you live where the winters are cold. Also, a lot of times a bad battery can take out a borderline alternator because the alt is forced to be in charging state all the time and this ages the alt prematurely.

Ok so this is what happen, and you both are right about it. I when and try to get my battery recharge. However, it faild badly making me have to get a new battery. It was tested again but show that the new alternator was providing little voltage. Hmmm,... could it had been that the dead 7v battery killed my new alternator? The alternator had a chiped section though which I was worry about if it had gotten dropped or something. Anyways, so, I took the alternator back to get a replacement. This time most of all my stuff was new and set right.

Finaly finishing my installation of the new alternator and the rain start to fall. I manage to drive home from the autopart place with the heater blasting, wipers on and lights on and the voltage metter was reading 13v. even with the stuff on it would go as low as near 12v but not in the center. I guess this time I have a working battery, working alternator and a new check relay.

I was told that when a battery die like you guys said, it can kill a alternator and the other way around. That is always best to change both when one go bad so like that you eliminate the chances of going into troubles in the near future. The guy was nice enough to give me the right bolt for my alternator which was nice of him. I even put a new connector tip to the wire that go into the screw behind the alternator.

So, far it looks like is working great and I pray to GOD, that it stay that way because I can not afford to trow in any more money. spend about 215 dollars in all of this maybe a little more. The alternator is AutoPile Technology or something like that is called. High Performance 2nd Gen Turbo Alternator 70amps. The check box Relay was out from an 1983 Rx7.

That is about it guys thanks for the info.
