So!
After a lengthy hiatus (10yrs) I'm back in a 1st gen!
It was like a dream, basically I stumbled into a conversation that ended with me getting the phone number/location of a low mileage '85 a couple hours from my house. This is what I found when I got there...

When I got to the interior I was in for a bit of a shock...I was told it had low miles but this is ridiculous!
A bit of mold starting to appear but otherwise like new interior...I came back the next day with a trailer even though it hadn't been started in over 2 years and had no battery in it to test...

I was too excited to sleep when I got home so I pushed it into the shop and started to clean it up a bit. It's weird to see how everything looks brown tinted because of the windshield and sunroof...is the hatch glass tinted too? Sure seems like it...

Looking pretty nice on the outside I turned to the interior and motor...
The mold wiped off easily (as I hoped) showing a pretty much perfect interior underneath...

Now to get it running! I changed the oil and spark plugs and drained the fuel tank. Unfortunately the fuel pump seems DOA, jumping the connector under the hood and turning the key on does nothing...
It starts and runs while spraying carb cleaner into the intake so it looks like the pump is dead or not getting any power, something I don't have time to look at just yet...
I hope to get it running before Christmas so it can be moved/stored inside again during the snow season, it's probably in shock just sitting outside right now, lol.

Black on charcoal interior - that's got to e a rare configuration! Congratulations on the find, and would like to hear the story on how you found it via conversation. I've always believed that just talking to people about your interests so etimes brings about amazing xoincidences like this,

Congrats on a nice score. You hear about "Barn Finds" and most of the time, there is more 'Barn' than 'Find' if you know what I mean.
This is one of those special exceptions that makes the Hunt worth while. Well done.

The way I came upon this was a very roundabout/coincidental deal. The owner found a used truck for her sister online at the dealership I work at, and the salesperson and sister were talking about Rx-7s the two girls got new back in the day when I happened to walk by and overheard them. Turns out the girls dad was a rotary nut and owned at least one of everything ever built with a rotary motor in it. His daughters graduated college in '86 but he let them get their new Rx-7s a year early because none of them liked the styling of the new FC at the time. One drove hers until well over 100,000 miles and junked the car, the other apparently didn't want to drive hers much because there was no one close enough to work on it if needed so it became a fixture in the garage. She called the only import store she knew of to see if they would be interested in it but they didn't believe her when she told them how many miles it has on it, and she was just about to start really trying to sell it when I happened by...

You know what? I just figured out you're right, I've never seen this charcoal color interior on a FB, it's so dark it's hard to get a good pic from inside.
I thought it was the standard gray but it definitely isn't, even the seat material is slightly darker. The gauge needles are seriously freaking me out, too, I've never seen them this orange before...

This is the difference of keeping it in a garage away from the sun. No fade of any of the interior. Nice car. Now make sure you get it back into a garage soon. Looks like snow is already where ever you are.
Yep, those guage needles tell the story. I can remember how cool those were the first time I saw them when my dad drove my SE home from the stealership. He took me and my brother for a spin with me hunched up in the rear cargo area, and I remember how futuristic the red illumination and orange needles looked at night.

wow nice find! the PZ black with Grey is super rare, and if it was built after 4/1/1985, it will have painted mirrors and shaded glass.
i just did an analysis of all the Rx7's Mazda built on 4/1/1985, and out of the 222 Rx7's they made that day, only 5 were PZ (GSL-SE only) and only 1 of those was grey interior.

The seats are in original condition and not different from any other grey seat. They are completely unfaded and in original condition as is that cluster. The best RX-7 barn find I think I've ever laid my eyes on! Merry Christmas to you sir! Keep us updated with more pics and info!
Great find!!!! I always loved my gsl-se. The cloth seats are my favorite. I was never never a fan of the leather interior. Some day I would like to get a stock gsl-se again some day.
