Question Bad Stationary Gear?

Ok folks,
How do you know when you have a bad stationary gear? I have a werrring noise that I cannot locate.

I have swapped out the thrust bearings, dizzy, and tested the external attached pices. I still get this noise.

Got any ideas?
Thanks

Tranny bearings possibly, does the noise go away when you step on the clutch?

I have the same problem, though I suspect mine is thrust bearings? I get the rattle of the gearbox when I'm in N but when I step on the clutch it goes away...thrust bearings? had it going on now for about 3 months...potential problem? I got told it'll be ok just the noise will stay.

Hey MR,
if the noise goes away when you push on the clutch that should be the throughout bearing. $25 and an afternoon will fix that.

I have changed that looking for this noise. I still have the noise.

The noise I have now is changes with the revs, but does not go away with or without the clutch pedal pushed. I have also taken off the belts and run the car, noise is still there. I have changed the thrust bearing up front (which was bad), but the noise is still there!

this noise can sometimes be attributed to the fuel pump, or so ive heard, in my car if it is, it seems to be common and dare I say normal?

Nope, it's the other way around. A bad throwout bearing will only be noisy when operating the clutch. It will usually squeal like a bitch when taking off in 1st. With the clutch all the way out the bearing won't even be turning.

does it sound like a faint tap-tap-tap? that increases with rpm's? i had that. all bearings were toast, stationary gears chewed, rotor faces contacted side plates. general over-revving mess.

you can take the rear stationary gear out to inspect with motor in the car but it's a pain to get it out. doesn't exactly slip out.

It really is a werring noise, and yes it does increase with RPMs. I was thinking stationary gears (but I really did not want to hear that).

Now, did I get the throughout bearing noise backwards? I will have to stop and think.

Anyways, to change the throughout bearing you need to pull out the tranny. Sounds big, but it really is not. You can do itr in a couple hours no problem. Remember to support the engine when you pull the tranny.

Good luck ~

Yep. The bearing only turns when it's in contact with the clutch.

If this is the case, it's a very good chance you have worn internal bearings in your transmission causing the noise.

It's almost like no one is listening.

Ok, I swaped out the trany and I still have the noise. I can't figure this one out. I have swaped out just about everything and I still have the same noise. Well, I think I will be seeing the Atkins folks next week. I will ask them what they think. I will post the results.

put a big screwdriver or metal rod on the motor. other end on your ear. you'll hear the noise and can try and pinpoint it.

Good News

I have been trying to figure out were the “werrring” noise. I have swapped out a bunch of parts trying to find the noise. I did not want to ruin anything, so I have not been driving it. So, far I have missed three races and a track day a Bremerton. Well today at the Oly gathering Dave Atkins took my car for a drive and gave me some suggestions. It looks like I have a bad input shaft in my tranny as well as a bad tranny mount. I thought it was a stationary gear or something. Well, I will swap out the tranny and mount and see were I am at. I think this is finally on the mend, and this is really good news for me.
