Bad Nikki carb problem isolated..kind of
Ok, I posted earlier about my Nikki carb. The car ran really bad, had no power. It just happened all of a sudden. It would pick up and run good for a little bit then back to bad. Eventually it ran always bad. After about 5 to 10 minutes, I had blue smoke coming out the back and my exhaust chamber was getting so hot it was glowing and smoking.
When I looked down the carb, I saw erratic fuel coming out of my jets. When I pulled the throttle, fuel splashed out. This is the second time I have had a Nikki carb do this. The first time I rebuilt the carb myself. It didn't help so I put on my other carb from my wrecked car. Ran perfect. 2 years later, same problem happened. So I rebuilt my 2nd carb, no change. I took it down, had it rebushed and rebuilt professionally, no change. I replaced my dist, coils, everything basically. no change.
I orderd another used carb from a Mazda dismantling facility and it runs perfect.
So, it is definitely a carb problem if you have this problem. I know about a dozen other people, now, who all develop this on 84 and 85's and have had to change their carbs.
My used carb doesn't splash fuel out my jets, they trickle at fuel throttle and are even.
One last word, if you have this problem, you will have to change your plugs. I ruined 3 sets of new NGK's just running the car less than 30 minutes with the bad carb. RX7 plugs foul ultra quick. I lost a brand new set once because I cranked my car for about 2 minutes, when one of my coils went out. So be warned.
My total cost for repair was 160 bucks, so not too bad.

Take a toothbrush and some carb cleaner or something to those old NGK's...just because they fouled doesn't mean they're ruined! Those things are expensive, clean those puppies up and re-use them later. Oh, and don't brush your teeth with that toothbrush anymore.
