Backfiring problems

Same guy, same car...

In addition to the suspension noises, the engine seems to backfire an awful lot, especially when cold.

I believe I have the mixture set correctly, as the plugs have a nice tan look to them when I pull them from the engine.

I have a repair manual, but I am not entirely clear on how to time my car, even with the instructions provided by the book.

Other then timing and mixture settings, I am not sure what else could be causing the backfiring.

Thanks for all your help and I am glad to have found a forum for my beloved automobile

Defiantly check the timing. You may want to take a look at the cap, rotor, and plug wires. Double check the wires are going to their designated locations.

Good luck,

I just replaced the cap, rotor, points(it's a '79 ) and spark plugs. I could replace the wires, but they look all right. Yes, I believe the wires are going to the correct plugs.

As far as the timing goes, I'm still a little unclear about how to actually time the car. I have 2 white timing marks on my pulley instead of the red and the yellow marks that the book indicate.

Also, I am assuming the "leading" mark with be ahead of the "trailing" mark on the pulley, maybe 90 degrees away from each other (relative to the pulley)?

If there is a reference on the Internet somewhere, I would be happy to check that as well.

Thanks
