Installing a header will not cause this problem but an exhaust leak can. Did you plug the pipe that goes to the cat from the air pump?

How bad is the backfire? Like a shotgun or quieter?

The air tube from the back of the intake manifold cannot cause an Exhaust leak.
If there is an exhaust leak it would have to be at the flange where it bolts to the engine.

That's the question... Big BANG like a 10-gauge shotgun or a funky burble-burble POP-crackle noise?

I covered the hole with terh proper covers from racing beat with super blue silicone sealant let it harden for a day then started it the backfiring is coming out the tailpipe.
