Question Backfires, stutter, low power

Hey guys just joined, I did some searching but didn't find much.

Car is a 84 rx-7 gs with 12a motor, 5spd, 147k miles engine was rebuilt 5yrs ago (supposedly)

Recently the car started running poorly, lots of backfiring, stuttering and hesitation, much less power @ lower rpms. Stalls and idles lower than before (before 1100 now 800)

plugs, cap, rotor rerplaced 3 mos ago

fuel economy is poor and exaust smells like raw fuel

Any pointers of which directtion to look would be great.

Thanks!

sounds like your float could be stuck, your deffinatly running rich, so i'd suggest searching for carb fixes.

Need to check emissions crap before the carb. Shutter valve and maybe the AAV valves. Procedure to check them is in the manual, link in FAQ.

Sounds like the same issue i had before I had the carb rebuilt. There was alot of carbon buildup in the intake and I had the same issues of stuttering, low power, and smelly backfires. I also had the ratsnest removed and the air pump.

I had very similar experience. MazdaTrix in Signal Hill, CA rebuilt my carburator and all has been good since (8 mo's later).

Don't even touch the carb until you have tested both AAV's and the shutter valve. Unless you like to waste time and money.
