They (the seats) look a bit chunky to me. They could be slimmed down a bit in my opinion, concidering they are probably only rarely used.
I've had quite a few times where I would like to have been able to squeeze another person in my car. My wife owns a two seater as well, and that kinda rules out the "We'll pick you up on the way..." scenerio!

But I would like to know of anyone who has made a rear seat, or has successfully installed one from another vehical that is as small as you can get away with.

And BTW, I would concider a grey cloth rear seat in perfect condition for $200...in case soemone's got one!

It's not a great pic, but it gives you an idea. It's from the '84 sales brochure someone put online.
They're useful. I have a couple of amps and the alarm system in one, a tool kit, spare parts, liter of oil etc. in the other.

I would dig the rear seat in the daily driver. Not in the racer though, more weight and who the hell would ride back there with me driving anyway.

Just my $.02

What I do like is that expanding/rolling cargo cover for the Rear hatch area.

Go junk yard scroungin... Lotsa Station wagons have em. Take width measuremenets and grab one. Fabricate your own brackets.

Is this one of those things mazda determined they really didnt need later on

Yup. Thats why you don't see them in FB's.

Also, a couple good raps with a hand sledge and they pop right out.

For what it's worth, I put bins in my '79 and left the braces in. Only had to cut a slot so the plastic could slip around and have an upholstery shop add a pit of black carpeting to complete to a stock like finish.

My '79 got munched. But, if someone wants the modified bins with '84-85 locking lids pm me with a $ or parts trade offer and assurance they would be going to a good home.

Back a few years i saw back seats in Mazdatrixs' catalogue. I don't think they sell them anymore, but maybe they could point us in the right direction!

I would like to get back seats in my 85 GS just for the future value and rarity.

Yes, the seats can only fit a baby or very small child, I tried to fit a mate in the other day and he couldn't fit.

This is the first time I've seen those storage bins... they're pretty cool.

Anyway... My backseats are long gone, replaced with an amp and a sub, and will eventually be replaced with 2 subs and more amps.

They really are much too small for anyone to fit comfortably.

My 1983 had factory back seats. I bought the car in Arkansas years ago. One day the blocked cracked from overheating and I simply walked away from it and left it right where it died. That was a bad day. I wish I still had that thing as I have never seen a 2+2 in the 1st generation again. Oddly enough my 1986 was a 2+2 also.

hey new guy, this thread is 9 years old. Unless you have a really good reason, not good to be bringing things up from the dead like that.

I find that information is perpetual and always valuable. Since the thread had evolved into a matter of trivia, I found that I could add to the discussion. Just as I found the thread interesting 9 years later, others may find it interesting even years from now.

If such activity is taboo, them I'm sure the admins can lock old threads automatically. Since they have chosen not to do so, I can see no logical reason why it cannot grow.

not exactly sure HOW you 'added' to the discussion, except by showing how you killed a 7 and just walked away from it. Not trying to bash a new member, just letting you know that it's not something you should make a habit.

Don't try it in the lounge, please. They might scare you off.
