Question Axle swapping compatability???????

I have a 85'GS and I swapped a 85' GSL rear-end...

I bent the passenger side axle I think and need to replace it but since Im doing so, can I JUST buy some -SE axles and put them into my GSL housing and have it work ok...??

As in are the lengths the same, diameters, and same number of splines???

What else would need to be changed for this to work other then the obvious like the wheels (because of bolt pattern duhh)? Can i use the GSL calipers, rotors (after being redrilled), and pads,etc....????

Thanks!! Preston..

From what I know I think the axles are interchangable...but you will need to swap out the brakes because the rotors that fit the -SE bolt pattern are larger. Of course youll need the wheels as well but I think if you get the -SE axles and brakes, it should swap right in.

Would it be possible to use the gsl rotors and calipers if i redrilled them because i just bought all new calipers, ebrake cables, pads, rotors, and SS lines........with less then 500miles on all of that.......

the only reason to step up to -SE rotors and calipers is because the rotor is bigger and thats it right??

Its possible, as long as the caliper mounts are interchangeable and one thing I previously forgot, the axle bearings, and I really cant say for sure.

If I were you, instead of all this work I would take my axles out and have them straightened. When I had my diff rebuilt it cost me $200 canadian to install new ring and pinion, carrier bearings, axle bearings and as well have both axles straightened. In my opinion its far more cost effective to have them straightened.

hm...i didnt think that could be straightened...so thats a great idea....because one of my worries was when i pull the axle to replace it i would need to get new bearing pressed on and that would be a bitch to do or get done around my area for a decent price....

FYI....
If I remember correctly the SE axles are thicker in diameter than the regular GS/GSL axles. You would need to change the complete 3rd member or rear end.

SE axles will fit into the 84-85 GSL housing.
All 84-85 1st gens have the bigger axles/bearings.All 79-83 1st gens have the smaller axles and bearings.
All the 84-85 disc rearend housings are the same. The only differences for the SE were the axle shaft's lug pattern, rotors and calipers.
