Axle Stuck

I'm having trouble pulling an axle out of a rear housing. It is an 84-85 GSl rear. The passenger side axle came right out with a slide puller but the driver's side won't budge. I tried puting a little heat on it, I tried using a 5lbs hammer, and I tried using a long pry bar. Any other ideas?

install the rims backwards but dont tighten the lug nuts all the day. then grab both sides of the tires and give it a big tug (same process as you would do to a dent puller).

No luck, it didn't even budge. I don't know why it would be so stuck, I had the axles pulled a year ago or less.

Slide hammer axle puller. You can rent these at most chain auto parts stores, and get a full refund upon return.

make sure you unscrew the 4 bolts holding it on. I straightened my slide hammer because I didn't check first..

how can u forget to take loose the only thing that keeps the axles from coming out of the housing as u drive? if the bearings held them in, i think it would take more than a slide hammer to get them out.

trust me, you only need to forget once. I had never had to take them out, so I didn't know.

I was about to suggest the retaining screws (guilty), but it seems thats been covered

I figure either the seal/bearing is binding, or the diff is binding to the axle. Maybe rotating the axle by hand (with the transmission in neutral) will help loosen up whatever is binding? If you can't turn it by hand, there's probably something wrong

I did pull the retaining bolts. I rented a slide hammer axle puller and was able to pull the passenger side axle in about 5 minutes. Nothing seems to work on the driver's side. The bearing doesn't even budge.

You just need to keep working on it to get it loose. I had this same thing happen when I broke the ring gear on my diff. I had to attack it with a mini sledge to finally jar it loose.

maybe the outer bearing race has rusted to the housing. try spraying good with some sort of penetrating oil.
