Axel shaft compatability

Hello everyone,

As some of you know i bent my RR axel shaft in an accident and need to get it replaced.

I found one preaty cheap from a 1979 rx-7 and was wondering if it would fit my 1983, i have 4 disk brakes, so do i need to get the shaft from a car that has rear disk brakes or it doesn't metter?

I checked the mazda parts catalog and it did not specefy that the axels where diffirent from drums to disks.
but i just want to verify this information before i make a 8h drive.

thanks in advance.

p.s i tried searching but couldn't not find an answer.

yes, it will work just fine. 79-83 axles are interchangeable, regardless of disc or drum brakes.

The 83 should have the small axles, though there are those who state that late 83's had the larger axles. I have an 83, build date of 3/83, and it had the small axles.
As for drum/disc, they will swap, as long as you change the retainer/backing plate. I swapped an 84 GSL rearend into my 83, and it had a bad axle, so I used one from a 85 drum rearend under a parts car.
Since the bearing has to be removed to switch backing plates, it's best to go with new a bearing.
Just check the axle that is bent, to see if it is the large or small one. If it's the small, the 79 axle should fit.

Thanks for the information.

I have just taken off the axel and how do i tell if it's a small or large axel? sorry don't really know much when it comes to this stuff ^^

You are talking about the axel bearing right? if so i have no choice but to replace it as mine shattered into pieces. Will order it and the oil seal which is also damage today from NAPA.

Once again thanks.
