Automatic to Manual Swap

About 7 months ago I purchased my first Rx-7, an '85 GS, unfortunately occupied by the auto slushbox. My first goal after getting my Rex was to get it over to a 5 speed. So i thought I would show you guys some pictures of the process.

Picture before we started

Pulling the engine

had the whole thing out in about 40 minutes

My engine bay, after this picture I spent a good two hours pressure washing and removing rust followed by a couple coats of black paint to clean it up.

A june bug I removed from my rotor housing.

The paint i talked about earlier.

Picture of the slushbox off.

Next was the torque converter...

The the flex plate.

Picture of the clutch and pressure plate on. After i got the flex plate off I put in a new rear engine seal and new pilot bearing and seal for that as well.

Picture of my RB headers and the blockoff plates for the intake manifold that came with the exhaust. I also replaced my oil pan gasket at this point.

New slave cylinder with braided clutch line

My friend Andy making the transmission mounts out of 1/4" Steel plate

Voila! Transmission mounts installed.

Picture of the engine back in. installed a pusher e-fan on the front of the radiator, works like a charm.

Picture of the interior that needs some serious cleaning. haha.

And a picture of the exhaust as a final product.

This took me close to 5 days just because of setbacks and having to go to work in between working on it. It works great now and it's a blast to drive.

I want to thank RayGreen for supplying me with a GSL Pedal Set, and RX3SP for the transmission. As well as the information i got from everyone on the boards. Thanks all.

Questions or comments?

Thanks guys.

Forgot to mention, as you can see when i got the automatic transmission off my beehive cooler was leaking on my coolant hoses. I was leaking a lot of oil before this, so it needed a lot of preventive maintenance. So I replaced the coolant hoses and put new o-rings in the oil cooler. Should hold till i get fmoc.

Speaking of leaking oil, my OMP is still leaking, im guessing the gasket has never been replaced. Is there any place to get this besides mazdatrix?

You can order through your Mazda dealership. Also there is a guy that sells rebuild kits for them .

I can't remember his name right now though.
