Automatic chokes

Please - are any of the 1st gen models in the USA fitted with an automatic choke? I need adjustment data or just hints. tips, anything, mine (in a 1982 Jap Home market model) seems to stay on for much of the time and the engine runs rich. I'm not exactly techy so I don't even know what to look for. My Haynes manuals don't even TALK about auto-chokes!

Thanks folks,
Frank

Well... What little I know about it there's an electromagnetic relay (connected into the choke **** assembly) that pops the **** back when the temp gets above a certain mark. Is your temp gauge/sensor working?
I've never heard it called an autochoke, just choke, but I guess that's what it is. I doubt there are differences between the japanese and american, or even european chokes. My 84 GSL choke will stay on until a little less than quarter way up the gauge.
It could just be that the carb is old and needs to be rebuilt. My carb gets 10mpg in the city and 24 in the highway, so I'm guessing running rich is their typical behavior after awhile.

Mine is fitted with the electric choke, i have replaced it once. it appears to be nothing more than an electromagnetic switch, which is powered by the ignition, and uses the signal from the temperature sender to turn it off.

Im not sure exactly how it works but this appears to be the basic setup of the system.

when the electromagnetic relay is powered it hold the cable in its position, when the temp sender turns it off, a spring pulls the choke back in.

Thanks Jayroc and Ultralights.

I think between the two of you you have pointed me in the right direction. I will see if I can find such an electromagnetic device which goes off when prompted by a temperature signal. That sounds logical. I have NO choke **** on mine. The cruise control **** is where the choke **** usually fits on the 1st gen. I can't even find an idling controo screw. The mixture screw is there in all its glory but there's nothing else next to it! It's a 12a engine model RE6PI.

Right now it switches on at about 2200 rpm and will only back off to about 1100 rpm after about 10 minutes running time.

Right .......better go and have a look!

Thanks
Frank
