autocross questions...

Hi all

I have just gone to my first scca autocross and was wondering if you could answer (btw the car is a 84 gs)

1. what would be some good everyday tires that would be decent for autocorss?

2. Would it be more competitive to race in stock or stock modified and why?

3. anyone know where to get a (relatively) cheap anti-sway bar?

thanks

The class should be chosen by your budjet. The sevens are fairly competetive in the CSP class, but I do not know how they do in their reclassed stock class this year. But all you need R compund tires to be competetive in almost any class.

Get your sway bar through the Mazda racing program. They have cheap good front sway bars.

I have heard good things about the Falkens and the Khumos, but prefer the Yokhama AVS i's, it just depends on the size. Stock rim, go with the yokos.

Yokohama A509s or AVSs....either one of those, I think they quit making one of them??

C-stock is tough because of all of the Miatas down here, you are best to go to C street prepared...if you are willing to spend the money. To be competative in Texas you really need an SE motor with either a delorto carb or a beafed up fuel injection, exhaust system, coil overs in the front, tokiko 5-ways, and some 13x8s or 13x9s. The CSP class is pretty competative down here! You may want to hang out it C stock for a while and get some seat time until you are ready to commit the car to autocrossing.

The sway bar issue will have all sorts of opinions! You can keep an eye out on the partstrader or just go and buy from Ground Control, Racing Beat, etc.... I on the other hand believe those bars are way too heavy. I prefer the "speedway style bar" from Mazda Comp. This unit weighs (not sure about this) about 1/4 of the weight but is about 4 times the cost! This unit is billet arms that attach just as the normal bar does but uses a hollow chromolly tube that is interchangable with diff. wall thicknesses for diff. stiffnesses

check out tirerack.com for tires. my vote for dual duty tires would be the kumho ecsta supra 712. i've heard very good things about them and plan to get some for mine. if you are new to autoxing, i would keep it in the stock class to learn the car, learn autoxing, and learn the competition. your best mod would be to get a new set of wheels and tires (R compound). these with stock suspension will be faster than street tires and suspension mods. after tires, get some shocks (koni or tokico). our cars are probably most competitive in the prepared class, then csp(miatas are tough), and im not sure about cstock with the new class system. but don't do it all at once, learn the car and progress with the mods and move up in class, you'll do best that way. have fun!!!

I thought they reclassed the 1st gen to E stock or D stock this year? and the 1.6 miatas as well.

Am I wrong?

We were reclassed to E-Stock. So were the 1.6 Miata's. Maybe someday, SCCA will put the car classification search back online at their website. I am too stingy to buy a rulebook this year. I compete in CSP. Our cars are very competitive usually at the local level. CRX's slaughter us at the Regional and National levels though. Miata's are nowhere near the challenge that the little Honda is.

I use BFG Comp T/A R-1 Racetires. I managed to buy an entire set for $100 new. 205/60-13's running on the stock rims. They make a world of difference. If I hadn't found the deal on the BFG's, I would rather have had Kuhmo Victoracers. Much stickier in my experiences. As far as using regular tires for autox, make sure you put lots of extra air pressure in. I have had good luck running the with the Panasports (15X7) and Nitto 450's (205/50-15) before I got race tires.

I would recommend that you run in the stock class while you are learning the car. When you do eventually go to CSP (kind of hard to avoid. You put a header on and you are there...), try not to make a lot of changes at once. You can drastically change the way the car handles, and the more changes you have made, the harder to figure out what you need to adjust to correct new issues.

As far as sway bars, I would recommend you pull your rear sway bar, until you have upgraded the front one. Being a GS, you are going to be lifting the inside tire going around curves and burning it off. A good limited slip rearend goes a long way to cure that, but until then, yank that sway bar off. Your rear will stay planted better, longer.

Most importantly... Have fun! That is what it is all about anyway.

Later,
James

Very good advice guys!! I didnt realize the 1st gens. went to e stock....cool. I agree on running the stock class, you are really wasting your money if you have never autocrossed and try to jump into a steet prepared or prepared class. You really need to go out and learn how to drive the car and how to read cones!

Hey 95mark8 check out my cone cruncher! I went from Cstock 89-90, Astreet prepared 91', Fprepared 92-93, Cstreet prepared 94-96, now converting to Fprepared again

I hate to admit this on the forum but you see a gap from 96-now on my autocrossing ? Well I had to sell my car to make a house payment . But, all is well, I bought it back in 2000....the same car!!! My wife got sick of my moping around and said find a car and get out of the house a little...soooo I started looking on the parts trader and pow! There was my old car for sale!!!! So I called the guy, gave him asking price and went down to Houston and picked it up.....aaaahhhhh...back in the saddle again! Get this, the guy I sold my trailer to sold it back to me....I got all of MY stuff back!

Sooo now I am rebuilding for FP, bridge port, 48 weber. stainless header, quarter master dual disc, 4lb. flywheel, 16x10s, cage, electric water and fuel pump, big radiator, coil overs and on and on and on. You can see why it is not on the track yet!! I had the 89' rotors and shaft lightened and balanced!!

It just keep on costing!!

i have BFG (i think) roadhuggers on my civic, and they perform very well, but i have to worry about rain, so there are better options out there for dry climates.

since you live in texas the falken azenis may work out well for ya. they suck in the rain and wear quickly though.

We stay in CSP this year. Next year the *SP classes may change as well.

As far as tires go...there are NO decent every day tires that are decent for autox. By a set of V700's if you want decent autox tires.

a set of tires i would recommend is dunlop sp8000 and 9000 they are kinda on the expensive side but they are very good tires. they are good in the rain and in 2 years this july i have raced in about 20+ autocrosses and leading my class this year with them on a 914. overall excellent dry traction and very good street performance.
