Auto tranny in se?
It will bolt up and work, but you might lose some functions like TC lockup since the later model autos are electronic controlled and the SE doesnt have an AT control unit in it........An auto GSL-SE would be original, but not entirely desirable.
It can be done, but I think you will have to use the flywheel and counter weight from the automatic car. I guess what some of these guys are not so politely trying to ask is, why would want to put an automatic in a manual car? Is there a reason why you would want to go through that mutch trouble?

I know a guy who did it to a GSL with a 4 port 13B, so his girlfriend could drive it. I remember him saying he had to modify the mounting point for the trans mount on the chassis.
I don't see that as not being helpful. As no one said it can't be done and or saying about the ECU would be redundant as in early said responses and existings threads on said subject.
And as far as a downgrade. Yes the value of the vehicle will be lower with automatic. Look at FB FC FD prices with auto.. Sort by price down and just save some time and scroll to the bottom. You'll find the auto 7's there.
If you need any part let me know. I have a 1985 GSL Auto that I'm converting to 5 speed. I have all the stuff required to change it to an auto. I'm sure we could work out a deal. PM if your interested.
Not worth it IMO. It is more work than you probably think. For starters:
- need flexplate, counterweight for an early (pre-'86) 13B. Since the SE didn't come auto, you'll need to look at pre-rx7 cars for the counterweight.
- auto starter
- swap pedal assembly to auto
- probably need a different drive shaft
- your rad may/may not be setup for auto tranny cooler
- you don't have the AT related controls
Maybe more. Lot of work to get something that will generally be less desirable. Why not just drop in another 5-speed?

Sorry, you are misinformed. This is a techical forum, not an opinion forum. When someone asks for tech help, that's what should be given. If they ask for an opinion, then that's what should be given. Want to give your opinion, do so in the non-tech forum, that's one of it's purposes.
thank you gsl-se addict and trochoid. thats all i really wanted. advice not an opinion. gsl-se addict youve answered my question perfectly. i really appreciate your advice and not bashing me for it. Im only doin this swap b/c i already have nearly eveything i need to do the swap, just needed to be sure i knew what i was getting into.... This is so my g/f can drive the beast also. ive got a few so i can afford to fudge at least one fb up.
Good luck with the swap if you go threw with it. Let us know how it performs after the transformation. If or when you do it. I might suggest to you a shift kit for the transmission. It will make more power usable and make the shifts more firm. It would feel more sporty while giving a hell of a ride at the same time. I had one in my old '85 12A GSL with Auto. I could dog manuals in it all the time.
Good Luck!

Well, the GSL-SE got a lot of unique wiring, and I wonder if the controller for the auto will be easily incorporated. I can't tell you if the controller for an auto is standalone or not, and if the auto harness can just be moved from an auto car along with the tranny, but it's a question worth asking.
Even if the guys here don't agree with your choice, it's certainly worth documenting if you do it, as you'll likely learn a good bit that we haven't been through.
