79 and 80 had the "dead space" you are refering to, while 81-85 had storage bins in that location. Japan and Austrailian versions had optional rear seats.
Placing an amp inside that area would be ok, if the amp doesn't need much air for cooling. Rather than cutting up the metal that is there, you could go hunting at a salvage yard, and see if you can find one that had the storage bins. Use those peices to cut up. Or just make your own.

Ive heard of people removing the storage bins and making their own sub boxes and amps and ****. Becuase I want to leave my spare tire in my car.

I was wondering if any one on the board has some pictures of that they can post?

The new RX8 runs without a spare... I'm planning on doing the same and using only an 8" or 10" sub in the spare tire well.

I have an SA, and put an ADS PowerPlate 100 (old school) amp in the passenger's side, and put ADS speakers in the metal cover over the dead space. It works ok, and sounds pretty good, but not the best. The amp kicks out on really hot days because of the lack of air flow.

I'm doing pretty much the same thing with mine, except I'm using a single 10", and it's going to fire down towards the floor so I can make it totally invisible.

my bros comin over tomoro to help me out with all this crap( is like an electrical genius) but im jus gonna take out the metal liek i said and put a 10" behind each seat and the amp in the middle. im gonna make the subs angle towards to seat so i get a nice message on my way to school. i need to find a way to get air to circulate through that all so it doesnt die out like Rich said. im not quite sure rhow im gonna do that yet so if u guys have any ideas...

Take out the spare and chunk it and get road side asst. on your cell .Get yourself a AudioBahn DCV 12", raise the floor 4 inch's and drop the bugger in. I use Audiobahn cuz I like the way they hit and you only need .5 cubit feet for the box. plus when you clover it up with the back carpet no one can see it.

not a big fan of systems but i think a 10" tube will look pretty good strapped down with an amp hidden in the bin. space saving too!

Unless you are talking about strapping the tube down in the hatch area (which I advise against simply for theft reasons) it's not going to work. A 10" tube can't fit under the storage bin area, I had previously tried it.
