Question aright, i am offically stumped, need a nikki guru

hey all
I've been trying to locate the cause of the high idle (1200rpm) on my 83 gsl, i've gone through at least 300 threads and tried just about everything. i rebuild the carb, (pulled the shutter valve out while i was at it(filled all holes with jb weld)), upon reinstalling i found it would be idling to high, i replaced all the vacuum tubes, i recetly pulled the carb off again and put a thin coat of silicon on both sides of the plastic shield at the base of the carb. i've sprayed carb cleaner on all of the connections (no response), the secondaries are closed, the primarys are also completly closed. the idle mix is set at 2 turns out. i checked the bigger hose that runs from the carb to the base of manifold. so i'm out of ideas, if anyone has anything please let me know, this is driving me crazy

thanks in advance

How about the idle set screw. Was that readjusted?

Throttle linkage may need adjustment to where the cable connects. Maybe there is tension remaining on the cable pull. Also, check the return spring on the actual foot-lever to make sure the throttle cable is returning on idle after acceleration.

aright i set the throttle cable so it's loose, and its still idling high, forcing the linkages shut by hand doesn't do anything either

after the engine is warm try disconnecting the throttle and choke cables to see if thats the culprit. Did you check for any air leaks around the intake manifold?

Why would he check for vacuum leaks in the first place? a vacuum leak doesn't cause a high idle. It causes a lumpy, hunting idle, forcing the driver to raise the idle so the engine won't die.

What you describe tempusfugitive is gotta have to be related to the linkage. It is possible to deform it by accident during handling for carb rebuild purposes. so when you are pushing the linkage up and towards the front of the car, the engine still won't idle below 1200 rpm? Do you have any pics of the linkage area?

Hmm, I think I found the problem. Your carb is upside down!

Seriously though, also check the dash pot and make sure it's not preventing the linkage from fully returning to idle position.

Edit: n/m, you removed it.

aright heres the new one, sorry couldn't get a clear shot of straight down the carb barrels, but the secondarys are definetly closed, as well as the primarys.

Hmm, everything looks in place. I'm running out of ideas, if it's not a deformed linkage problem.

Paging RX7carl or Sterling!

tempusfugitive, you're in Ottawa, I just noticed.

I spent 3 years tracking sources of high idle. PM me and we'll meet up. I've gotten it down to a science, and I'm sure we can find the source of yours I live in Aylmer and would be MORE than willing to help out a local first gen owner. We really need more of us because of all the cocky 2nd gen owners in the local Ottawa guys

PM me, I'll help any way I can.

Jon

Your miss information...a vaccum leak can/ will cause a high idle, trust me...depends on the leak wether it will still run smooth or not...******

Could you pretty please post the cause of the problem when you find it?

My 85 GS has been idling at 2k since I got her a year ago, and Ive had some of the best Ohio has to offer look her over (thanks Pete, Denny, Paul, Marc, and Mark!) to no avail.
