Arcing Coil, and yah I searched

Hey whats up people Im a newbie to the board but not to message boards all together. My name is Shawn and my problem is that on the way back from a business meeting my 12A started losing power. I get it back to the house and pull the plugs, replace them and start it and it runs better but I noticed that both coils are firing off the positive and negative terminals and there is fire flying off my wires! The wires dont look bad, no cracks and they are the OEM NGK set for the car. Noone seemed to have a definate answer for why that would happen and Im not the type that just replaces everything untill it runs again so if you know what could be causing it to run like shiot lemme know. Thanks ahead of time

Clean your coil connections, then replace your wires even if they lok good. That's where I'd start...

My '82 did the same thing and the culprit was a cracked coil. It could be the wires also, so I'd get a new set of wires, and if that doesn't solve your problem, one or two new coils are in order.

i would guess it's the ignition wire that goes from the coil itself to the dizzy. try swapping those 2 wires in place of eachother, and see if the other coil arcs...

Try spraying some dielectric grease inside all the boots. That helped me a lot.

Coils more than likely. Electriciy will find the easiest path, if its arcing across your terminals on the coil then the inside has broken down. Post the fix. Good luck.

still having troubles, but I think some of it is fuel as well

I dont know whats up with it, now I have the plug wires arcing off of each other and jumping the boot and grounding on the outside of the plug on the 2nd rotor, also I tried to wire my secondarys to mechanical last nite and that helped some as far as pickup, but its still running like ****. Anyone inthe central FL area? I need help or Im gonna sell it and I really dont want to but damn this thing has been a pain in the *** and I've only driven it for a week of the month Ive owned it. Im not new to cars at all, I was one of the motor heads at MX6.com and had an F2T motor in my 6 putting about 225 to the front wheels, but Im fairly new to rotaries. PLEASE HELP!!

Wow! Welcome to rotor land! Once you get it you'll look back and laugh Its just a car, you know what your doing, stop doing more than one thing at a time, you really need to get a handle on the arcing. Its just a simple elictrical ignition, your probably well familiar with it, just a little thrown off by the spinning.

question, is there a BETTER book than the Haynes manual

I have replaced the wires, cap, rotor, both coils, cleaned EVERYTHING. What else would make it arc? Also I priced the ignitors for the disty and was surprised at the price, apparently they make these things with velvet, platinum, AND gold cuz thats the only way they could charge that much a piece and still sleep at nite. Is the 2G RX7 coils that hard to swap in cuz I found a set for 12 bucks at the local yard. And I need a factory manual before I wipe my *** with the Chapter 13 supplement in my Haynes manual. Check Ebay maybe? thanks ahead of time

would the coils leak their oil if they were cracked???

Many coils are liquid filled. If any are leaking oil they will die soon after. The oil in them is used for cooling.

People this is the oddest thing .. I havn';t ben on the forum for a while ... I was just signing on right now to ask you about the same problem ! loll
I , on the other hand, actually fixed it ... There is only one thing, it's still missfiring a little ... but ALOT less !! .. on the rear coil , I actually saw the spark in between the negative and positive. Big blue one so I figured that owas my problem ... I replaced that coil and the wires, and it;s been going "smooth" except it's having a hard time iddling ://
rcksuprstrMX6: Changing the coils took me 5 minutes lol .. REALLY simple .. I got brand new coils for I think it was 40$ canadian ! ... you really should get new ones so you know that that's not your problem ..
That's how I fix things : elimination and questionning.

I will change the other coil cuz we're now sitting at a confortable -7 degrees instead of -40 so it's a little easier to work :P lol

oh yeah rcksuprstrMX6
one last thing .. start up the engine with the hood open ... go next to the coils and cap and all and listen for the slightest "tic tic tic " ... if you got that noise your problem is *probably* where that sound is comming from

way past that,

Ive got two new coils, wires, cap and rotor plus new plugs and still have arcing issues. I gradually lost power coming down I-95, I would have to give it a little bit more gas because it was missing and when I would floor it, it would take off with good power like it always had. Now it wont do that and it idles like ****. Also I still have arcing problems and when I ran the new plugs the 1st rotor had a light tan to the plugs after I ran them but the 2nd rotor's plugs were still white?! Fuel and ignition I think is my problem. Anyone know of a website with reasonable parts for a 1st gen? thanks ahead of time
