Didn't take many pictures. 215 disk on 225 fly:
http://i27.tinypic.com/1rexr7.jpg Old engine: http://i25.tinypic.com/2lnidmh.jpg The resurfaced flywheel picture was a little fuzzy so I didn't bother loading that up. Video is uploading |
The engine is running pretty good, but I still have a little bit of a lumpy idle. I have noticed since the romp Sunday, that idle is starting to clear up somewhat. Maybe just getting some more miles on her will straighten her out :D.

Who let the Mr2 in and the honda elf!
|
Sam, put your rats nest back in. That engine ran fine with a rats nest.
Stu, where's the movie? |
Well, I apreciate the advice Ray, but I decided to really find out why that engine has such a lumpy idle. After tearing down that engine (and the 4 before that one), I found out that it had a corner seal pretty much welded to the rotor. So I thought I would at least have some good housings, boy was I wrong. So after tearing down 5 engines, I did at least get two good housing to work with. I am going to keep my portings a little secret right now, but as the assembly takes place, I'll let you guys in on what's in store for the SA. So enough of the blah blah blah........On with the pics.

Here's the carnage after tearing the engines down :D

Yes, it was another long day of cleaning out the rotors. Surprisingly enough, when we tore down the last engine that ran in the SA, that thing was CLEAN! I am a firm believer in seafoam, cause carbon was basically nonexistant on it. That engine was good, the rotor with the stuck corner seal... man. The corner seal was worn down, and the corner piece of the apex was almost nonexistant! The rotor looked very usable, but the bad corner side... worn down to oblivion.
Can't wait to get this engine up and running! We found a soft seal kit for $124 and it should be picked up soon. As for spec'ing everything, it was great and the hard seals were awesome. Little wear and no scratches :) |
Jeez Sam, I was wondering why we hadn't heard from you lately. Very impressive.
|
I am trying to keep the "new" engine for the SA on the down low. I have a few tricks up my sleeve for this one. It will stay NA. I just want to see what kind of power I can pull out of a NA without going with a P port. All I am going to say at this point is.............I'll let you know :D

I cant get this grease off my hands... or my knee...

Now that i know this is gonna be great :) "YOU CAN DO IT"
|
I picked up my gaskets/soft seal kit today. Should be getting the 3rd gen corner springs tomorrow. I can't wait to get the porting done on the housings this weekend. If everything goes well, I hope to have this thing back running by next weekend.
|
I swear we have the fastest turn around time. First getting the blown engine out the SA and another one in, now engines all torn down and rebuilding to put another in.
My guy will be at mazda tomorrow, so I should be getting them in the AM. Man I cant wait for this thing to run! |
What are you guys doing for seals? Do you have enough hard seals between all the motors that you'll reuse them? Where did you go for soft seals?
And do you have any SE rotors in there? |

And do you have any SE rotors in there? Oh and Sam, I didn't ask you this, but are you going in for a break in time? Since the soft seals are pretty much set-them-and-run-them, do you think that the hard seals would be worthy of break in? I would consider atleast 1.5k or 2k miles of 4.5k and less to be sure. |
Break in? You know how I "break" them in :D

Oh yeah, how could I forget how you break things in. Good thing you showed me:

Today's update. Sam got the gasket kit and we ordered some 3rd gen corner springs, should be in by Wednesday. Turns out the closest dealership who had them was in Tennessee, and they only had one. Yes, only one spring. Test drove an RX8 today. Not really oomphy but man it goes!
Some pictures. As usual, I always get to see an interesting car on the interstate: http://i30.tinypic.com/fo3sqg.jpg Rough picture of some exhaust ports. First one I stopped working on and the 2nd one (on the right) I got D shaped and matched to the sleeve. I think this is what style we will be using. http://i29.tinypic.com/20tp2e1.jpg Meanwhile, Sam got the seals pretty and clean: http://i27.tinypic.com/15ppog6.jpg Then I had to leave, felt bad all day and started dry heaving. eugeigieb :( Next time I am up there Sam we can start on the housings we are going to use if you want. I will see if I can bring some other drill bits as well to clean it up. |
Man.......We had a blast in the Turbo FB today! I thought that clown in the Civic was going to sh$t himself when we left at that light. I think we scared that Camaro that was sitting behind us too :D But niether wanted to play after that. Go figure? Glad you got a chance to go back and get some pics. I told you the old girl left some good ones!
|
*sigh* that clutch of yours sam um......well you know!
|
Yeah, I know........Kinda running short of funds right now. I still need to upgrade the clutch in the Turbo FB. Every once in a while after a hard pull from 1rst to 3rd, you can smell the clutch. If enyone has a nice clutch in my price range (free), I'll take it off thier hands :D
|
thx for takin the time to post this man. I picked up some good info
|
No, thank you. I am going to get pics of the reassembly when we start in a couple days. I have the front iron mounted to the engine stand waiting on the 3rd gen corner springs. The portings will become more clear once we get to assembly. I didn't want a 10 thousand rpm engine, so we are porting to make power between 2500 to 8500. The port selection will be good for some grunt out of the hole also. Will update with pics as soon as possible!
