WHAT?? apex seal chatter can be caused by many factors. rpm alone could be one if your winding the ever loving shit out of it. i have taken stock rotating assemblies over the 9k mark. chatter is caused by poor lubrication on the seals, bad balancing, worn bearings, and a few other issues.!

No shit. I was referring to a technical paper published by Mazda showing the apex seals tendency to vibrate and chatter at certain frequencies and rpm ranges. Even with all clearances in spec let alone an old worn out engine. It may have been even lower than 7400rpm now that I think about it. Of course there are other factors involved but that's not the point I was making.

Ok guys. Let's not let another thread get out of hand. If you can't be an adult with your comments, I'll ask Kent to close this thread.

SpikeDerailed 05-15-08 06:16 PM

Stupid question, but have you already checked the ignition timing from swapping everything over? I know I have had timing a bit off before >.<

bad 83 05-15-08 06:18 PM

Well, after some local support from BigIslandSevens (third gen and second gen owner) and wfo91rx7 (second gen owner), it finally took off. I still have to recheck the timing, and readjust the carb, but it finally sustaned an idle. I think I'm going to grab some new plugs tomorrow because of all the MMO, ATF, Ether, and gas that were on the old plugs. I'll get a video of the "new" engine when I get time. Much love to my local guys Dave, Josh, Stu, and you too Ray!

ray green 05-15-08 06:21 PM

Yeah! Let's see the movie. I hope that fugger finally puts out the HP it was meant to do (it still had the cats hooked up when it was in the brown one).

Nice work Sam. And Stu. And Dave. And Josh. Did I miss anybody?

bad 83 05-15-08 07:08 PM

I can't express enough how important it is to help each other out. These guys know I always try to help everyone I can. So in my time of need, they pulled through for me. I live my life on the Bo and Luke Duke philosophy. "We don't need money. We barter our way through life".

Frickin eh man! Kickass you got her started! Now time to "break" her in.

Congrats again, and just in time too! Will we get to see her on Sunday?

Jeezus 05-15-08 07:25 PM

Oh, and maybe you can finalize the thread with a vid of it running and the engine torn down to show the damage :D

Count me in on the damage report! I wouldn't mind checking it out.

Edit: Err, I mean the old engine torn down.

BigIslandSevens 05-15-08 07:35 PM

No problem Sam. I enjoyed it. I don't know much about first gens so it was a good oportunity to learna bit by getting hands on. Not that I did much other than turn a key, pump the gas and try to Zap you with the Dizzy!:D:D

Plus When it is all done I may want to buy it,... If the other two we have don't suck us dry first.

I think with new plugs, a carb adjustment and some fine timing adjustments and it will be straight. It had pretty decent response once we got it to fire off and idle.

Still wouldn't start without a little ether help. ( I think due to the plugs and all the MMO residue getting burned off.)

Let me know whenever you want more help. I am ususually open in the afternoons.

You should probabl;y changew the oil too with as much ether and gas was going thr the engine.

Awesome to hear, Sam. If I was closer, I'd be over there wreching with ya!

bad 83 05-16-08 05:16 PM

Thanks again guys. I took a couple of pics from the tear down. That seal went kicking and screaming. The irons will be ok I think, but the housing and the rotor is trash. I'll let the pictures speak for themself.

Mutaku 05-16-08 05:34 PM

I remember when I had my rebuilder show me the housing and rotor the seal took a crap in. Seeing those marks made my cringe lol

So what your saying is..........Friends who let piston owners drive thier Rotary may cause it harm? I need to do a documentary on the SA. From the junkyard hag to junkyard to junkyard queen :D.

t_g_farrell 05-17-08 07:42 AM

Hope that tranny swap works out for ya.

wfo91rx7 05-17-08 09:00 AM

ouch that brings back baaaddddd memories.

ZAN_TUNING 05-17-08 06:10 PM

is the center iron cracked?

risingsunroof82 05-17-08 10:36 PM

I think what you're seeing is the reflection in the iron.....

bad 83 05-18-08 09:38 AM

Well. After all the mixed info about the flywheels, I decided to pull the '81 flywheel back out. Stu and Josh came over last night and the engine came back out. I cleaned all the surface rust off the '84 flywheel and pressure plate. We put it back in with the 215 mm disk. I couldn't get a 225 mm till sometime next week. So here's the deal. If you have a 83-85 12A, DO NOT use a 81-82 flywheel with out changing the front counter balance. Leason learned. I was sure it wouldn't matter. I was told it wouldn't matter. Well, from first hand experiance, I was wrong. So, with that being said, me and Stu put about 25 miles on the SA last night. Actually, it was about 4 am this morning. The engine still sounds like a street port, but the vibration is gone. Stu tooks some pics and video from last night. I'll let him give his 2 cents :D.

ray green 05-18-08 10:16 AM

Nice work Sam, I've got to hand it to you you don't give up! I'll be watching for the pictures and video. I always had that 12A from the brown one hooked up in front of stock cats, so it was always real quiet in those days, hard to imagine it sounding like a street port!

Jeezus 05-18-08 10:36 AM

Yeah, I got home about 5:45. Bird were chirping and whatnot. Pictures in 10!
