Sam pulled the exhaust off and gobs of shit came out lol. I will let him fill in the blanks at what happened next lol......i cant stop laughing lol
Sam's right, you need to wash things out with ether. But three or four cans of starting fluid and run that through, that should do it. Then start it on the ether.
he washed it out with carb cleaner and it almost fired and then.........lets just say i dunno if the wheelbarrow will make it lol.
I have the utmost confidence that sam will get it going just gotta get all that goop outta there. |
WHAT!?!?!?!?!??! lol :)
Ok. So Ben calls me. While were talking, the subject of carb cleaner came up. I figured I had a full can to waste, so I started spraying it down the carb. There were a couple of times it "popped" like it was going to take off. Then........"POP". A big flame shoots out the exhaust port. Wouldn't have been that big a deal, but I had a towel lying on the inner fender that I had there catching the crap flying out. Well..........It burst into flames. :D I grabbed it and threw it into a wheelbarrow I had sitting beside the garage. I bet the neighbors really love me now!
I am "off" today haha. So did it finally start??
LOL Thats GREAT!!! You should have got some video so we could all see the great flaming wheelbarrow!!!! lol Is the engine running yet?
Well thats one way to start a fire....... rotary power!! |
So close. I need to grab a couple of cans of Ether. Plus, I need to let the battery charge some more. Hey Stu. Since your "off" today, you want to fill everyone in on yesterdays fun? You could load up thos pics we took!

So here are the pictures. Sam came by in Big Blue. I laughed at him needing a huge truck to carry one engine, when my protege handled 2 in the trunk. Must be Mazda Power!
Comically sized engine to truck picture http://i29.tinypic.com/10r1iyu.jpg In the bed http://i29.tinypic.com/j9rpxj.jpg Arrived at his place. Out with the old, in with the new! http://i26.tinypic.com/eqv3wi.jpg Cleaning up the ports a bit: http://i26.tinypic.com/2m2uscg.jpg Carburetor and dizzy: http://i31.tinypic.com/210m1pt.jpg Almost complete, got the alternator and the belts on. Lets check the flywheel and clutch, eh? http://i27.tinypic.com/11mb3ut.jpg No one had a 54mm socket around, so I ran back home to grab my breaker bar and some "earl" (oil for you northern folk). When I got back, we broke off the nut after some trying... here is what we got. Flywheel and Clutch http://i29.tinypic.com/micieb.jpg So out with the 225mm and in with the 215mm from the old engine. Still was in great shape too! Happy time ensued http://i25.tinypic.com/29bld06.jpg Got it in the bay http://i31.tinypic.com/677hv7.jpg Got the rad and oil cooler hooked up. All systems go, fill the fluids! http://i29.tinypic.com/20sw0eq.jpg I hate it when he gets that look in his eye... |
like a crazed billy lol.
Oh yeah, she be brewing tonight.
You guys should have called me up. I have the flywheel stopper and that big ole socket for the flywheel nut plus converters to use it on a 1/2" impact or whatever.
Love the last pic, thats priceless :) |
Oh yeah, and that is a Castrol hat, came free with the oil. Lol.
running?
Yeah, and can you get any more of those hats?
we had TONS of castrol gallons that come with the hats. we may have sold them all by now though.
They had a few of them, but the cheapest oil came with the free hat. The rest (with the hats) were like 3$ more.
daaaamn just read this, sorry to hear about the 12a but damn glad you got it back in without haste!!
has it fired up yet? if not i may have a trick for you to try ;) also to the person that said the apex seals start chattering at 7400rpms... WHAT?? apex seal chatter can be caused by many factors. rpm alone could be one if your winding the ever loving shit out of it. i have taken stock rotating assemblies over the 9k mark. chatter is caused by poor lubrication on the seals, bad balancing, worn bearings, and a few other issues. why do these apex seals fail so randomly? well, it's usually not random in an n/a engine. especially the 12a's with their 3mm apex seals. a lot of times these high mileage rotor housings will start to flake and these pieces can get caught up in the seal. sometimes people who don't pre-mix will start to get chatter becaues the omp is pretty pathetic at best and the seal will skip and bust. there are honestly a ton of factors, but you can't really complain if it's already got a ton of miles on it. so keep beating the hell out of them! if you are unsure, then do a rebuild :D kick ass SAM! |
I thought 12a's have 2mm apex seals stock????
12A are 3mm..so are pre-'86 13Bs. Some of the real old 12As had 6mm seals too..not many of those still around, though
Just an update for today. Still haven't got her fired off yet. I did almost get it running about 4 or 5 times, but couldn't get her to take off. I'll need someone to crank her over while I'm spraying in the Ether. Any of you local guys busy tomorrow afternoon? She is wanting to fire so bad!
