I've called numerous places around here looking for a set of trim clips so I can reattach the trim pieces I took off my car to get painted. Out of the 5 auto glass places I called, only one of them could even get the clips and the guy wanted a rediculous amount for them... so I'm trying to find them online. Does anyone else know a place that sells these? I know Victoria British, aka Black Dragon Auto sells them, but they charge a $18 shipping fee for a $9 bag of plastic clips... so I'm looking for a place with a bit more realistic shipping prices. Does anyone know of any other sources for these parts?

I've answered this question at least 3 times in this section. Standard Auto Glass can get them for about $15, or in my case, had them right in stock. I just did a search on "clips" with my userid and found the info:

i would just glue the clips down... thats what we do when they break...

 

On a side note, how do you remove the trim pieces? I want to try polishing mine (most of the paint is already gone), and don't want to risk bending them up trying to remove them. Also, I've read that removing the trim piece above the door is difficult/impossible...any ideas on that?

I would leave the drip rails, at the least, in place and mask around them. You can mask off all of the window trim with a couple layers of tape and save the headache of R&R.

 

FYI..........
The drip rails above the doors are set in place with metal pressure clips. You can remove them by pushing up on them from the inside out towards the roof with force, some what of a twisting action is what worked for me. Caution should be taken so that you don't bend then.

That's what I did with mine, clips look like they are plastic though. I cannot get them back on the car and I have 3 different sets to work with. Only part of the widebody that is not done externally.

 

I still have the part number you gave me. I used it when I called the different glass shops around me. Out of the 5 shops I called, a random independent shop was the only one who could get them and he wanted $35 for the package. I called Standard Auto Glass and the guy said he couldn't get them either. I guess I'll try going into a Standard Auto Glass shop and talking to the guy in person.

I need to replace the windshield anyway...it has 5 or 6 chips and the one in my parts car looks pretty good. Most of the paint is gone from the trim and it looks like they would look pretty good with the rest of the paint removed and polished, so I figured I'd try that when I replace the windshield, so I still need to know how to remove the trim.

Windshield trim pops off, clips break. I have even broken new, small clips during install. There is a fancy trim tool that you can buy to remove the trim, most of the time I use a narrow stiff back putty knife. The trick is to not induce a twist in the long trim pieces or flatten the rolled under lip. Have fun.

Black Dragon carries the clip set for under $15.

 

Rich, since this thread has been hijacked anyways. I sent your article out last night. Should see in a couple of days.

If you are going to try and save that windshield from your parts car. Be very careful when removing it the success rate is very low for trying it. Check to FSM for the replacing of the clips. Also about polsihing the stainless trim pieces. IMHO it does not look good left that way. I would recommend having them powder coated a matte black for durability.

 

Thanks for the article and advice, Doc! Yea, I don't know for sure about polishing the trim. I thought I'd try it and if I don't like it then I'll get them powder coated...IanS is set up to do powder coating and is anxious to throw powder on anything he can get his hands on LOL.

Yea, he lives about an hour south of me, so we get together now and then. He and I learned how to rebuild the engine together, and I helped him do some carb tuning a couple of weeks ago with my LM-1. He powder coated my coil bracket for me. Now he has some "extreme chrome" powder that I'm anxious to see in person.

Hey - when you say the success rate is low for removing a windshield, what do you mean? Do they break easily?

I broke my 1st 3, since then I'm running about 80%. You have to wire 100% of the adhesive and making the pilot hole for the wire can be tricky. My glass guy won't even guarantee safe removal.

 

I just bought some from TLK, or TechnologyLK, both the 6 pillar clips and the 14 upper & lower clips.
