Unhappy Anyone else notice....

That the fb is kind of falling away in the rx7 clubs. When I go to meets I'm usualy the only fb. It's all about the FD and TII now. We need to bring the FB popularity back! Any MI 1st gens try and come out to the meets more! We need to represent lol. Anyone in other clubs notice this?

I'm one of only a few FBs in my local club, but most FBs locally are li'l beat-to-hell rustbuckets - one's even painted Mary Kay pink! Mine is one of only about 3 in the city with pristine paint, and the only one with aftermarket rims (the other SE has stock ones still)

Our local club has a pretty solid 1st gen cliental. Even the president is a 1st gen owner. Converting to a TII engine though.

I'm only a bridgeport though. SOmeday, turbo maybe, but till then regular unleaded all the way. Most members even have good condition 1st gens, myself included now.

Yeah it seems to be that way. Even when you open up RX-7 Magazine from Japan its all FBs & FDs, and a small SA section in the back.. I'm in the San Diego RX-7 Club and usually one of the few 1st gens that show up at meets, there are lots more at Southern California RX-7 Club (SoCal7s) meets though, which is cool. Sadly enough, the most 1st gens I've seen gathered in one spot other than at SevenStock are at the junkyard.

I'm about the only one around here that has one.

It gets a decent amount of attention when I take it somewhere though.

I agree, Buckaroo's...

A couple of years ago you could usually find a 2st gen for sale in the Cols., Oh. Sunday paper, but for most of this Summer it was all 2nd gens. 1st gens seemed to have dropped from sight?!?

Denny,
From the 'ol corncrib....

Is it just me?

Am I the only one that thinks 2nd gens are butt ugly? I was looking at one this weekend, and I really disliked it.

How about a more positive outlook on this...around me it doesn't seem that the popularity has waned in the ~15 years I've been paying attention to 7's. My parents bought their first 7 in '87ish (83GSL), and I can't say that I've seen a decrease since then. That's not to say that their popularity is high, by any means. 7's (and 1st Gens in particular) are still few and far between.

They're only going to get more sparse as time goes on. They only built so many and they're slowly rusting and getting totaled away. Nothing will change that. The only thing that can change is the perception of how many there are around. People who keep them in storage 99% of the time could start driving them more, or sell them to people who drive them more.

I like being the only one in town. There are umpteen fart-piped Civics in town, but I'm the only 7

No you are not the only one. 2nd gen styling is not very oiginal IMO.

Strider,

I personally don't think the 2nd gens are butt ugly, but I do think of the three generations they have the most generic body style. There are a couple of cars that look pretty similar. IMHO the SA's, FB's, and FD's are quite unique looking.

I toured the Mazda factory in late '85 as they were introducing the new body style. I knew right then that I preferred and always would prefer the SA/FB body style to the FC. It's been long enough now that I can cay with some confidence that that will never change

It really depends. I saw one stock 87 GXL and a stock 88 T2 and they looked really nice; the 87 GXL being the one I liked more

It depends on the color, wheels, mods, etc, IMO.

IMHO the FC looks far too much like the Dodge Daytona & Chrysler Laser, not the Porsche 944 it was trying to ape.

The FD is a thing of beauty that looks modern even 10 years after it was released, and the FB has classic 'pocket rocket' pseudo-english sports car lines.

When you do it right, it never goes out of style. The FC wasn't done right and looks aged.

Same here.

Also you can somewhat see the lineage when you look at both a first gen and a third gen. Second gens are kind of blah. I really have no desire to own any more of them.

Its just that...what it reminded me of was a shrunken version of my 87 Pontiac Firebird Transam. Now I liked that car, for an American car and all, but for a foreign import I expect more flair to the styling and less generic. They had a winner with the first gen style. They took those beautiful curves and flattened them out.....The car I was looking at had been red, but the red had oxidized really badly, a common problem with all red type paints, so that really hurt the looks too...

I love the 3rd gens, and of course my 1st gen. I just don't care for the 2nd's.

One thing I've noticed when approaching my car in a parkade (parking structure, to you Americans) and just seeing the rump in 3/4 view, an angle one doesn't normally look at especially not side-by-side with other cars:

The tiny rear hatch, in concert with wheels right behind the doors, make the SA/FB look like a small predator ready to pounce. The lines and proportions imply a potential energy straining to be released.

The rear of an FC, by having the tumblehome base flush with the beltline of the car, looks bricklike by comparison, a box waiting to enclose driver and cargo, nothing more.

To expand on my earlier comment of doing it right; The 911 series Porsche has a subtle and elegant character line in the sheetmetal, dropping from the side glass, over the rear wheel, and down to the rear bumper. Even when the car was reskinned in the water-cool redesign they kept this line, making it one of the longest enduring stylistic flairs in automotive history (only 1 change in, what, 60 years?) and it looks as good today as the day it was penned.

Ha! Try being into RX3s and 4s then you'll really feel like the Lone Ranger. I'm not fond of the looks of the FCs either, too generic. I like the looks of my SA better.

You're not alone! I remember when Mazda first d'ebuted the 2nd gen. My thought was "NOOOOOO, they fsck'n ruined it!!!!!" and that's *still* what I think. Of course Mazda made good with the 3rd Gen.

Butt ugly or not...... I still wouldn't mine having one.... after all it DOES have a rotary engine.
