Anyone dug into one of these 5 speeds?

This one needs 2nd gear syncros bad(probably others as well) and I am comtemplating doing it myself. However, after reading the shop manual it appears as there are several "special" tools required. Looks like a normal puller is used on several things, but there's also a "main shaft lock nut wrench", and some others.

I've been into serveral manuals before, but this would be my first foray into this particular one. Any insight would be appreciated.

There must be a serious problem with the 1st gen 2nd gear synchros. My 2nd synchro is toast and I've heard of others. I'm just replacing the trans with an SA chassis 5spd.

It is, but that site has a bunch more links which are handy. So thanks for that Kerebrus!

I was hoping someone would chime in that has actually rebuilt one. However I had no idea that one could be plucked from another gen and work. That might be an option if the first plan of rebuilding fails or come cost prohibitive.

or you could just swap in a whole NA 2nd gen tranny. all you have to do is change the tail shafts housings and it'll bolt right in. Or if you must you can swap in the miata gearset, but if you drag your car prepair for it to break. if you search all this info is out there and has been covered very recently.
