Looking for some examples of creative radiator placements in a 1st gen. Anyone have any pics or examples?

There are a few around, I am planning a vmount setup to sneak a three row aluminum copy of the "short" fb radiator under a supercoupe intercooler. I will post pics as soon as i get to fabrication.

Do you have any V-mount pics? There's so little fore-aft space in an FB, I'd think it would be a tight fit.

 

My car has a v-mount mostly finished with the rad on top and intercooler on the bottom I'll see if I can post pics when I get it back.

 

I considered it,but a conventional setup was just easier.
I did make dedicated ducting for the radiator inlet and exhaust to compensate for airflow blockage from the FMIC.
Your more likely to see V-mounts from the FC guys since there are just plain more turbo FC's than 1st gens.

 

I'd be very interested in seeing how you mounted the V configuration. Thanks!

 

Leaning towards just making my own radiator support like so...

 

Heres my more conventional setup.Its kinda an accute V-setup since the radiator is tilted back FC style!;-). I didnt really want to deal with the extra fabwork of the typical V-mount setup.


Lower scoop dedicated to the radiator.


Ducted main oilcooler,theres another smaller cooler in the left chin vent.

 

Appreciate the pics, that’s a nice setup. What are the radiator measurements? I noticed the VW corrado radiators are pretty much exactly the correct measurements to fit down in the lower radiator valance area. They measure 26.5X12.5, also cheap at around $100 shipped. These are single core units, but I think I could use two of them in a V. Or even 2 radiators and an IC in “C” formation. My engine setup is going to generate A LOT of heat. Almost feel bad mentioning it, but I’m using a large turbo V8. It needs to be able to cruise around town without overheating. –thanks!

 

While it's not an IC the oil cooler makes up the "floor" in front of the radiator on my IT7. 150 degree WT and 210 degree OT at Road Atlanta WFO down the back straight in July with an ISC air dam and properly sealed ducting.

 

The radiator is a Howe unit I bought 10 years ago.I dont remember the specs but it was built according to my dimensions. I sent tham a diagram and it was on my doorstep 3-4 days later for about 300 bucks!
Its a double pass unit tapped for the stock sensors and heater hoses.It sits directly on the frame rails on little rubber blocks I made and the top is connected to the remains of the header panel with sheet aluminum and rivits. Its solid,pretty heavy for an aluminum unit so it can soak up quite a lot of heat.Plus I have a big negative pressure extraction vent in the hood to keep thing in the engine bay cool.It works very well.

This setup frees up lots of room for turbo goodies! I like it... The FB has a long snout. Something like this is right up my alley.

 

Here you go.. My FB is not completed yet but it should in about 2 weeks. It has a 13B Half Bridgeport with a Comp Turbo GT35R Triple Ball Bearing, V-Mount intercooler and water/methanol injection. @2GSLSE.. I have never seen any V-Mount Intercooler the way your have your car set up before. It's always another around with The intercooler on top and radiator on the bottom as shown on the earlier posts.

Hey you know the reason we are lurking around in this forum because we all want to share our past experience with all you Rotary's lovers. If I don't know or ain't so sure about the project, I would keep the comments to myself. Because I first read about your comment, the first thing that came in my mind was this guy didn't know crap. If you really have an FB with a V-Mount Intercooler in which you described as radiator being on top and intercooler being on the bottom, you needed to request a full refund. Anyone who have any knowledge about the V-Mount intercooler, they would agree with me since what you had described didn't make sense at all. Hey 2gslse. Please post pics of your V-Mount and prove me wrong. I will keep my eyes open for your strange set-up..
Ps. I just can't hardly wait to see you V-Mount intercooler set-up.

 

Sorry about the delay I forgot about this thread but here is a pic while it was at Speed1.

Most setups have the intercooler on top but with the intercooler size and not wanting to cut the support bar out of the car they were reversed. Currently the car is at 336 HP at 9 psi it still needs to be finished and the A/C put back in but its a blast to drive now ( its old 12A/Auto combo sucked)

 

Around South Florida, the Corrado radiators are only for quick Drag Racing cars only.
they are good because they are efficient for their very small size, and they sell a nice fan kit to go with them.

But, they aren't good for a rotary street car. Just not enough cooling.
I wouldn't recommend it.

Is your car one of the the "Rotorholics" car? If so, I always wanted to see more
pics of it. I've only seen a couple from a previous seven-stock or something.

Do you have a pic of the trans mount to convert from auto to manual?

 

I don't have any pics of that but I re-used a stock FB mount and since my car is a 85 I had to put a plate to span the distance from the trans to the crossmember. I found the info here along with a pic of what I did. if your car was an S2 with the 3spd aut it wouldn't be needed (the 4spd auto is longer)

 

Mine ws a 1985 GSL auto 4 speed. I made a plate also. Its 3/8 plate so it's plenty thick but it seems to want to sag toward the front. I think it is rear trans cross mount is getting torqued. Heres a pic off the car. I'll have to get a pic of it assembled.

 

I have the same problem with mine being torqued down. I need to revisit that issue and add some sort of mount since it will prob give some issues with the added power now

what size rad did you use? stock front valance fbs seem kinda hard to vmount well due to the small size of rad required (but still massive cooling need).
