Muffler dude is an imbecile.
What exactly is he doing?
If he's replacing the cat's with a straight pipe, that's OK. Will be somewhat louder, but I didn't see that you had a header so you should be cool. Make sure he uses thick wall exhaust pipe....not the crap they use on Pinto's!
If you're replacing the muffler too.....spend the extra dough and get the Racing Beat, or do your research and pick a muffler that'll last,,,,go cheap here and you'll just be throwing money into the wind.
Will cost a pretty penny, but now is the time to invest in a complete system....look on the bright side....you can do it yourself and save the money you spent with the muffler guy

yep, the muffler guy might not be the best guy for me to get rotary advice from. Although he did make one of those hydrogen makers out of a water jar with big nails stuck in the water connected to a battery. He showed me were it blew up and put a hole in the ceiling. I'll take a look at exhaust today and see how much trouble it would be to take the Cat out my self. SC

FWIW Rotary Performance sells the Bonez Race pipe for 81-83 for $75. It bolts to stock manifold and stock midpipe. Replaces all the cats with pipe and a silencer.

Racing Beat is expensive, but few others compare. If you have RB components you will never buy another muffler or exhaust because yours is worn out.

A cheaper model? $75 dollars is dirt cheap for a quality part that will bolt right in. If nothing else, do what I was going to do before I found out that the previous owner put aftermarket cats in. Sell your cat for $100+ and buy the pipe. Several guys on this forum pm'd me asking for my cats and offering up to $130. That way you MAKE money by replacing your cat.

Yes the redline pipe is a good deal. I'm just having a bad weekend. The 96 Acura Cl has a clicky axle and My 91 Saab blew a seal and is pumping oil out as fast as I pour it in. So the Rx7 has moved up from good time weekend driver to Daily Driver.
New question. Is it possible to clean the catiletic converter and reinstall?

buy the $75 pipe, pull out the cat, put in new pipe. Sell cat for $140 and put the extra towards your CL axle. You can do it yourself, its so easy my girl friend could do it. the axle is easy too, it just pops into the tranny and the old one will pop out, use a pry bar.

I believe the 83's have 3 cats. 2 are smaller and 1 is normal size. The Bonez pipe I mentioned before replaces all three. Exhaust replacement can be difficult without the proper tools. I would recommend having a sawsall with a metal blade, an angle grinder or a torch. You will probably need to cut some of the bolts. You will also be better off if you plan to replace all the bolts, nuts and lockwashers that you remove. I like to use Stainless. 4 main parts to the exhaust system. Manifold, cat and precats, midpipe and muffler. You can remove the cats, seperate the large one, and punch out the honeycomb on the inside to make it a straight pipe. The pre-cats will likely be straight pipes already. The cats are not easy to separate and, if your cat is not damaged, you will devalue it by gutting it. I have done it and would not do it again.
Buy the pipe. Sell your cats. It is the best option I have found.
Where is the exhaust leaking from? Can you feel the leak in a specific place? Do the gaskets leak or are there obvious holes?
