CA Any tricks to getting heater control panel unhooked from wiring harness?

I've got an '85 that I'm trying to wrestle the heater control panel out of so I can replace the burned out bulbs. I've figured out how to get all the surrounding stuff out and have unscrewed the screws holding it in. Unfortunately, the heater control ***** below the slider panel are fixed and allow very limited access to the area behind the slider panel. I've been trying in vain to get the cabling unplugged, but I can't see how it's plugged in and don't want to manhandle it too much for fear of breaking something.

Has anyone out there successfully removed this slider heater panel out in order to replace bulbs? If so, how did you do it?

Are you trying to replace bulbs in the logicon unit? Or the bulbs associated with the ****/dials for fan and temp?

The logicon unit (above the dials for temp/fan).

To clarify: have you been able to remove the console bezel, or is this where you are stuck?

If you can clarify whether this is the problem, I can walk you through wherever you might be stuck (as I've done this numerous times now...).

Once the console bezel is off, the screws to remove the heater control unit are easy to access.

The electrical connector block for the heater unit is difficult to reach through the front, and may be easier to access from underneath the dash (you have to crawl underneath on the driver's side and reach up to get to the connector).

I assume you have the digital/pushbutton logicon? Or do you have the slide-switch heater unit?

demongo,
I have the slide-switch heater unit. The electrical connector block is where I'm stuck. I've gotten all of the console bits out and have pulled the slide-switch heater unit out as far as the connector on the back allows. But, as you are confirming, it's a real pain to get to from the front. I hadn't thought about going at it from the under the driver's side dash.

Also, have you replaced the bulbs in the slide-switch heater unit before? The parts manual is a little unclear. Looks like there are 2, maybe 3 bulbs, but I have no idea what bulbs they are.

I've not dealt with the slide switch unit before, sorry, but the bulbs should have modern replacement equivalents.

I found logicon bulb replacement to be problematic, as the bulbs *appear* to be "neo-wedge" style, but the dimensions don't seem to match neo-wedge style bulbs available today. After buying several different sizes--and finding none that fit--I've just kept the old ones and looked for old logicons for replacement bulbs.

Hopefully you'll have better luck with replacements.
