Question any tips for rebuilding my nikki carb

This is my first time rebuilding my carburator besides the carb kit. Any advice on cleaning liqiuds things to watch out for, and anything that would make the rebuild a bit easier.

Theres lots of stuff to clean it with. I have a 5gal tank of nasty stuff from NAPA, but its $100 a can. Not economical for one carb. When you remove the accel pump nozzle and plug from the main body, be careful and dont lose the weights and checkballs. Study the diagram that came with the kit, and also the Haynes or shop manual procedure. Take your time and dont let stuff get lost.

send it to sterling

But, there is a bucket of some carb cleaner from autozone for like $13 i buy to do carbs, I soak the main body and then take a sirenge with some in it to all the air bleeds and all that good stuff... (i take them out when soaking the carb, dont loose them)

Other than that, start with a nice work are thats clutter and dirt free and take your time! It may be kinda hard to set your floats, took me a few times....

Good luck!

Andrew...

I use a vernier caliper to set float levels. Only way to be really accurate. A good steel rule works ok too though.

Don't put the gasket between the carb body and throttle plate in upside down Your secondaries won't have any vacuum so you'll be really slow.........

I've been there too. Check your gaskets twice before you bolt it back on. Its very disappointing to go to all the work to rebuild the car, only to have the car go slower.

I just rebuilt my carb last week and this is exactly my problem!!

No vaccuum ot secondarys, if i pump something like break cleaner into teh circuit from where the secondary diaphragm mounts to the side, and it just floods out from teh bottom of the plate where teh gasket between it and the plate with the buterflies ought to be.

I was jsut oging to crack it open and look for some dsort of blockage... I'm glad i checked here.

SO, how do i tell for certain the gasket is upside down? does anyone have a photo or a diagram of what it should look like in place ?

How is it posoible ot put it upside down anyway it seemed to fit only one way?

It is possible to place the gasket on incorrectly but is fairly obvious when done so. here are some thumbnails of the butterflies and the correct/incorrect placement of the gasket.

carb rebuild

just did one on my 85 and it is working very good. got the kit and the cleaning solution from Advance, (never buy any part at Autozone).
Like a couple of the members said, keep the working area clean and do take your time. There is a thread on Mazda manuals that shows a better picture of where every litle part goes. Hopefully you have an air compressor, it comes in very handy to clear, dry and clean every little orifice on the carb. good luck.
