any rx-7 mechanics in san jose?

im lookin for someone to help me work on my car, or atleast help me find out what the exact problem is, im right around the willow glen area of san jose, but yeh, heres the story:

so i finally got the right alternator for my car, was out driving it all last night, ran beautifully, this morning at 10, i woke up, went to drive to my dads, and my 7 was running like ****

like small backfires constantly, we opened the hood, straightened out the distributor cap, then drove it to my dads, but still, it was like it had no power what so ever, i was on the freeway flooring it, going 60-70, which thinking back, was probably a bad idea, although it didnt sound like the rpm's were gettin very high, so im not worried about blowin the engine(dont have a working tach)

i dont get how something could go out over night, me, my brother, and my dad came to the conclusion that its probably the distributor, or the points, or the distributor cap, but something in that region, are we on the right track? anyone else have a problem like this?

oh yeh, i forgot to add, from 0 throttle to about 1/3 throttle, the car drives like normal as long as the rpm's are up, but soon as i go past 1/3 throttle, it bogs like hell

how could something go bad overnight like that?
-from a previous post

and then just today, more than a week later, i started it up, and it was running just fine, had the choke pulled out, driving down the street, it warmed up, the choke popped back in, and it started running like complete ***. so i pulled the choke back out, but it kept running horrible =/ i dont get it

anyone willing to gimme a hand?

well, I live in south san jose by oakridge mall, unfortunately I know nothing about working on cars (though with this car I am DEFINATELY learning bit by bit) so I also would appreciate the info. also a place to get body parts in that region (by tis I mean the bay area in general. I had a front end wreck and need bumper, bumperguard, and the part that goes between the headlights that covers the front of the rad and the horns)

oh, it's a '82 gsl-se.

very sorry to hijack this thread....

Should be the ignition

It should be the ignition, the best thing to do would be to trash the old points distibutor and upgrade to the newer ones that don't have the points system (83-85). Try checking the coils for resistance also, or just replace them with some junkyard ones; after all - pick & pull and pick your part aren't too far away from willow glenn.

Actually the only 7 with the points distributor was the '79, so you can use any first gen after that. Not just the 83-85. Good luck with your problem.
