I was just wondering if there were any other 1980 RX7's with tiny rear seats here on the forum? Also, anyone know where they would have came from, from Mazda or after market? It is not from Japan and was made for here in Cananda, so hope this helps. Any info would be appreciated - thanks!

I am pretty sure that the first gens in Australia and Japan came with back seats, at least some of them anyway. I'm not sure of all the countries that got them with back seats in them, but I know that some countries out there had them. There are quite a few people on the forum that have them in their cars. I prefer the storage bins myself... at least I can use them.

Definitely great looking car as well, by the way.

 

i know a very few came with seats from factory, it was an insurance thing it think. my buddy has a gxl with rear seat. i would really love to get a set of these, almost just for the nastalgia(sp? i butchered that word lol) your car looks nice, btw welcome to the forum, have fun with her.

 

I have a back seat. 78 Japanese Savanna GT. My seats also have a funky thing to them not sure if any american models had it. The front and back are black leather with perforated center parts that ahve a red background to them...so you can see red through the perforations if that make sense...

 

Yours are kind of odd, the way they have a higher head rest.

 

The European models came with back seat. My 1980 model has one.

 

Yeah what's with the raised head rest portions? My japanese model just has a straight across bench back...i would take some pics but it's currently not assembled lol.

 

mine has.

you can fold them down and increase hatch space. Also on the head rest I have a folding top you can unfold and it will cover any cargo. Came with the rx7 logo on it.

 

I have rear seats in my 79 as well.the original owner bought them from a company in California when the car was only a year or so old,and I even have the hand-drawn instructions for them from the old now defunct RX-7 club of america.I will post up some pics if you want when I get home.

The previous owner told me that they were purchased from the dealer, but not through Mazda. I'll have to check if mine fold down to increase hatch space (just got the car three days ago).

I have one other question, my RX has a sun roof. I think it is after market but i'm not sure. How can I tell the difference? It is a push up one, if that makes any sense.

Oh ya, I almost forgot. The previous owner said that he was the only one in Canada to have rear seats like that. Probably not true, but he seemed to be a pretty honest guy. Everything he sayed about the car was dead on, and he told me about every defect that the car had. I have yet to find one he has not mentioned. I wish all people selling cars were like him.

Anyways, thanks for the input. I enjoy seeing the different forms of seats availabe. Was there an option at the dealer to add seats even if it wasn't done at Mazda?

Dealers sold and installed both OEM and aftermarket rear Seats.

 

One thing I have always wondered is for those of you here in north america, what happens if the driver gets into an accident with more than 2 passangers in a car that is only insured as a 2 passanger vehicle. I dont really want back seats, but for those of you who do, did you get the car insured properly somehow, or are you just riskin it?

 

That is an extremely good question. I never really thought about that before, but even so I think that the back seats would be so small you couldn't fit a real person in the back to worry about it, though. I am curious as to the answer though.

 

Good question. Couldn't you sue the dealership or something - I know it was a long time ago, but.....

Sorry to digress a little but does anyone have a writeup about installing a Fc back seat into an Fb? I've read that it is possible and not difficult. Any confirmations from anyone out there?

 

one of the 2nd gen parts car ive got happens to have the backseat. years ago i was searching for 1st gen parts and one of them i check out had a backseat. i should have bought it

 

From my understanding car sompanies insure based on sports car or passenger vhecile. The Rx-7 has an option for rear seats and tecnically is a passenger car and not a sports car. That's what my insurance agant told me. Also that's why camero's and mudstains allways had similar nasty little back seats.

 

where could i fined one of these back seats? and how much do you think one would be?
