Any one from SA, Fan belt problem
Any one from SA, Fan belt problem
Any one out there from South Africa? I recently bought a series 1 with a 13B motor, it has an unfortunate problem of eating up fan belts. I suspect the guy I bought the car from had no idea of belt size and threw a hand full of different sizes in the boot. Can some one tell me the correct belt size and reasons for it to through belts at higher RPM. The belt runs the eccentric shaft pulley, water pump/viscos fan and alternator.
Welcome to the Forum Fellow South African!
I dont have the size with me right now,but will look at the size tonight when i go home.I`ll post it in the morning
Have you checked if the Pulleys are aligned properly? You can do this using a metal ruler, and holding it against the ecc shaft and the water pump.Allso check how the alternator pulley lines up with the waterpump pulley.
Are you using a single,or dual alternator pulley?

Did all '82 RX7s' arrive in SA in gold.
I'm running a single pulley on the alternator. There are 2 V's on the water pump and 4 V's on the eccentric shaft pulley. There is a aircon compressor but no belt.
I'd rather sweat and go fast.

You could try the yoohoo belt. It's just a 3L220 belt that only fits around the eccentric and waterpump pullies. It measures 22 inches long by 3/8" wide. The alternator belt is normal (31.5 inches, I think). There is no adjustment, but it seems ok, especially at high RPM where it actually tends to grip tighter due to centripudal force acting longitudinally on the belt's apex.
I totally do not believe in running a dual alternator belt setup because both belts will still slip. I can even grab the waterpump pulley and turn it by hand on a dual belt setup; even if both belts are tensioned properly. Totally useless.

Do you have a Gold Rx7 as well?
Rememeber to check if all the pulleys are aligned properly

the advantage of having a dual set up is to ensure that you dont get stranded in case of broken belt. its almost like owning a VW bug...you have a spare engine in the trunk.
I had several customers with broken belt problems no matter what. I ended up replacing the alternator pulley and it worked-no problem since.
