Any 1st gen. 20B owners around ?

Hi there,

I plan to put in a 20B in a 1st gen. street car. I need some info. about what's the best way to go about doing it, mounting the motor etc. Its on a RHD car. Might consider going N/A initially and later on , turbo.

There are a few people that have done it, and there are a few threads on how to put a 20B or almost any other engine in a 1st gen. Search around and see what you find.

I'd like to do it some day. You will have to reverse the crossmember and cut off the stock motor mount pads. Then either fab up some side mounts or just throw on a 1st gen front cover and fab up a new front crossmember and new motor mount pads. Install some good 'competition' motor mounts in them and reuse the stock front cover mount plate.

Avoiding side motor mounts will allow maximum room for a turbo or header.

Mine will be NA to start. Depending on which shaft it has, I may do a turbo some day. It must be rebuilt first as it is a high mileage engine. It's old too. #756. I can't tell wether it's ever been opened before. I hope it was a reman because I think all the old shafts were replaced with the newer tapered ones.

I'd like to get an 'eBay' clutch. I've read good things about the sprung 6 puck XTD kits. Easy pedal effort, but grips like a much heavier duty pressure plate. It will stand up to 300HP, which my engine might make some day after a rebuild and proper tune. Easy to drive for a puck clutch, too.

My exhaust will probably consist of 2.5" pipe. Not sure about mufflers yet. The header is done but may need some tweaking to fit in the 1st gen chassis.

I'm surprised that using a 12a/SE front cover and mounting it that way works for the 20b, I would think that wouldn't be strong enough. then again it can't be that much heavier, and there are plenty of 13bt's in first gens putting down a ton of power and it works.... Hmm still though...

I want to see a 20B powered FB some day. I think it would be one hell of an amazing vehicle, even if it was all motor.

There's quite a few 20B first gens around over here. Although not many ported na's. Plenty of drag car 20Bs. I know of 5 20B 1st gens in Brisbane alone.

I have decided to hang onto it for a while longer, no probs with the front mount too for the people who asked.

One thing you do want to do with any 20B is to get rid of the stock intake and go for a custom triple or itb setup

Mine gave a gain of a maximum 50 rwhp, made a lot of difference all throughout the rev range, the throttle is VERY responsive though. Everyone who drives it for the first time bunny hops down the road.

Freakin Aussies. You guys have all the good stuff down under. I would crap all over myself, if I had access to a 20B. I don't think that I could live without a turbo on one. Still, NA 20B, sick man, very sick.

Near 300 rwhp in a 1100 kg car makes for a pretty quicker streeter, turbo or not. It is far more usable being non turbo, the torque down low from off idle is awesome, while still keeping strong power to 8500 rpm.
