antenna repair

I'm restoring a '79 limited edition RX7 and my antenna is currently lying on the ground next to the car. What should I do to repair/replace it?

replace with one from a bone yard car or ask around here to see if someone has one for sale. the aftermarket ones look ugly imo and with a car as rare as a 79 Limited in "beat black", you should make it look as original as possible.

Well I still have the original antenna. How could I just put it back into place and get it working?

I've never done it before, but I recalled this from cruising Mazdatrix' website http://www.mazdatrix.com/n-4.htm

Antennas

"The factory units are not cheap. Normally, if you can hear the antenna motor running when you turn the stereo on or off, the motor is fine, and you can replace just the mast.

On 79-85 cars, it is a little tricky to wrap the long nylon back into the winder, without letting many little springs and things go springing off into never-never land. Be very careful, and YOU have to remember how everything goes back together. We have done a lot of them, and most go OK, although there are the times we wish we hadn't started. The right taillight, and interior panels need to be removed in order to get the assembly out of the car. "

I've pulled the antenna from my '84 RS and it's not easy...but it is doable. Just have patience when trying to remove that dang motor from the itty-bitty access hole. I did have to unscrew and gently move the pass. side panels out of the way, but didn't need to remove the taillight.

Good luck!
