Hello Rotorheads again,

Long story short, after I stripped the car down, with no drivetrain and interior, thought I sold it a couple of times, never had time to convert to a trailer, I have finally decided to fix it back up.

Factors why:

1. Not too many GSLSE are in solid shape around here.
2. It has a new windshield.
3. It has a really good paint job.
4. I am having first gen withdrawal symptons again since I sold my Yellow 79 to McMarc.
5. I bought two other GSLSEs and I have enough parts to make a nice one.

Two and half GSLSEs = One bad *** GSLSE. I am going to try and keep this one.

Left over parts will eventually be sold, stay tuned.

Isn't it ironic, after I did all that work taking it apart, I am going to put it back together. That's all good, I have Carr4Y (Carlos) to help me put it back together.

 

glad to see it not get crushed... i recently pulled one back from atlanta and had it here in my driveway for about two weeks... i got in trouble with the local code enforcers, saying that i couldn't have a non running car on my private property..??? it is insured and has current tags on it but it still doesn't have a motor and tranny in it.... sucks to be me i guess!!!

 

You need a more appropriate rotary puller. Maybe a red 74 REPU, like this one parked in front of my house.

 

I wish I had another REPU. I've owned two in the past. They are cool. Here is where my donor engine, computer, engine wiring is coming from.

If it's torn down to nothing, what are your plans for wiring? Snag from another 7 or aftermarket or pro install?

 

Update:

As far as the wiring, I used three different harnesses from different cars. The last car I picked has very nice and clean brake lines, fuel lines. Working sending unit and nice looking tank.

I took all the underneath shielding off the car and started rustproofing the whole undercarriage. The weather and my weekend work schedule is not helping me. But between still stripping the cars, fixing this one, it has been a nightmare. On Tuesday I will post more pics....

 

So, the wires are all used donor stuff right? Man, the more I look in my bay the more I realize I either need to let it be or go all out. This fixing/cleaning one thing at a time seems like a waste of time when it comes to results. Thing is, I'm not a car guy(yet) so to speak and I don't know what's involved in taking an engine or most other things in there out. Even some of the smaller things, which I plan to attempt (starter, alternator) will be my first time. I'm thinking of maybe removing as much as I can from as many areas of the engine bay as I can, cleaning said area(s) with a drill and wire brush, followed by rattlecanned high degree rustoleum flat black to clean up the look.

I guess I'm torn between running it how it is and tearing apart having nothing to run for some unknown time, and possibly never having the know how to put it back together.

 

It was easier for me because I was stripping this car. 90% of the car was stripped. I am taking a little time to do it. I am giving myself another month. But it will be very nice. It helps when you have done it over 100 times like I have. Just don't be afraid of it and tackle it. But if this is your daily driver, it will be very hard to do that kind of stuff.

 

It use to be my daily driver, which I am working back towards, but for now, I'm juggling the Accord and 600rr. Would be nice to have the 7 for car days. I'm gonna swap out the whole fusible link mess for the 2nd gen fuse box. Can you think of any other alternatives to stock wiring which minimize wiring clutter? I'd also like to wire brush down some of the top level paint which has small hints of top level rust. Basically do a cleaning and rustoleum treatment to any segment of the engine bay I can. This is why I'm leaning towards full removal of everything including the engine.

 

Some updates on the car, I was taking the plate off where the upper smaller link is at to get a fresh piece of sheetmetal in.







Then, I went to friend's house. Carr4y on the forum here. We commence to drill out the plate out of a 1982 RX-7







After we did that. I went to test fit the sheetmetal and position this plate in and the freakin plate doesn't line up. I totally forgot the 82 wheelwell plates are different that the 84-84 plates. DuuuuuHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!


That is OK, it's a learning experience. Just wanted to share to you, just in case you guys do this kind of job too one day.

 

lol i just took a rear fender from a Datsun 280z and welded my plate right to it saved alot of fabrication work

 

Well I am going to post this later on, so help other forum members. Basically, we took a healight cover off a 1991 Mazda RX-7 and we cut a shape for the panel. Luckily I had a 84 RX-7 GSLSE we took the plate off. After think the car has a solid plate, it turned out to have a little pitting and surface rust. We scrape it off and put new liquid metal, molded the headlight cover to the wheelwell, used a torch to heat up and make the slight curve, welded the sheetmetal and welded the reinforcement plate. The used more liquid metal for seams instead of seam sealer (stronger) and applied rustproofing and paint. Here they are.

Ahhh, looking good with metal weld to fill in gaps where seam sealer would and undercoating. This will go another 20 years and is probably built better than new.











All the final as you can see the rustproofing was still wet. If somebody agrees to archive it, I will go in much detail. Thanks to Carr4y on RX-7 club, the parts cars (three GSLSEs) and you guys for looking.

Another update.

23 Apr 07:
Prepped and cleaned gas tank, painted gas tank. Installed gas tank and reinstalled lines and sending unit.

24 Apr 07:
I took the GSLSE rear end off the donor car. Cleaned and scraped off the grime it had, rinsed it again and painted it glossy black. I am a little beat up right now. Installing rearends by yourself is a pain in the butt.

Today I am going to replace the right rear caliper, it is leaking somewhere around the boot area and I will install the front GSLSE struts and the rest of the braking system.
