Alternator Wiring! Please Help!

Hello guys... Alright..well I know it seems like one thing after another... However- I changed the alternator on the car today and the new alternator has place for a two plug connector and my old alternator had a plug for a three wire (rectangular plug)... I went back to the parts house and that is the only one they have available... So...the question... I cut the connector off......Which wires go to where? On the new alternator there is one verticle connection and one horizontal connection. How do I wire my OLD 3 wire system into this new two wire alternator? Confused? lol...me too!

An easy question... This is on the race car... If I were to take the main line that goes to the single post on the back directly to the battery...Would it charge or does it need that other connector to excite it? If it needs to be excited...refer to the question above!

Thanks guys! Hopefully I will get everything squared away before Saturday!

Have a look here:

You have a '79 so the stock alt used an external regulator. The '80 and after models had an internal voltage regulator. You need to bybass the factory regulator as shown.

The other option is to just run new wire. There is the output to the batt, one terminal that gets switched 12v, and the other is for the alt warning light.

That's exactly what I did, ran the alternator output(single pole) directly to the battery. It worked just fine for charging the battery. Another racer said his would not charge when hooked up that way. Also one issue was that power was coming back to the alternator from the battery, this is a no no. I think I should have wired the alternator to the cut off swithch and then to the positive on the battery. I get to do it again as I'm building a new car.

Good links posted above.

Good luck.
