Alternator swap..which one?

Yesterday I start my car up and I see the voltmeter needle go up and peg out after 16 volts. I'm thinking that's not right!
I get out mt digital multi-meter and attach it to the battery with the car running and it's almost at 19 volts!!
Quickly shut off the car before anythings gets fried. Check the battery voltage again and it's normal around 12.4
I know that second gen alternators have a higher amp ratiing ( which would help with mt stereo and driving lights)
So before I run off and buy a new one or go to the junkyards to get another GLS-SE alternator, which FC one could I put in its replacement safely..the 86-88 or the 89-91?
Thanks for your input

yeah It;s the voltage regulator, not the alternator, but if you but in an FC alternator the voltage regulator is internal I believe, so that will fix the problem

Internal voltage regulator is fried, get it rebuilt or buy another alt

Oh and 89+ has a higher amp output, but a different plug, so if you get a 89 up one, besure to snag the plug
