alternator swap

Does anyone have any info on swapping alternators, I have a 12a - is there any way to fit an alternator with more amps like a 3rd gen alternator - thanks for the help.

yup...it's not hard.

First, you gotta pull the pully off your original alt and put it on the FC/FD alt. Mounting's pretty self explanatory. hook the posative lead up. You'll need to get the FC/FD alt. plug from it's original wiring harness and splice it into your FB wiring harness.

Get a manuel or a wiring diagram...you want to make EXTRA UBER CERTAIN that the wires are connected right on the plug. Easy swap.

I wouldnt do a FD alternator. The FD uses a serpintene (SP?) belt system. Get a S5, its 80 amps, double your current alternator.

The FD alternator works fine and it's a higher amperage. That serpentine belt pully? It's got a bolt holding it down...you take that bolt off and install bolt from factory alt.

Trust me...it's a common mod on FC's...it'll be fine.

the S4 TII one bolts straight on if you don't feel like changing anything. I think its 75 amps.

Close, if what I was told was correct then:

All first gens were 40 amp
S4 was 60 amp
S5 was 80 amp
3rd Gen was 100 amp
RX-8 is 100 amp

I was just going to send him there....unfortunately, Innitab lost most of the pics there (j/k!!), so I'm going to update the info with a new thread on Sunday. Having done it three times now with an '80, '83 and '84 chassis, there are small differences in the harness colors I will address. I didn't want to do anything until the '83 had put down a thousand miles with the TII alternator to be sure the conversion was correct. It was,,,a nice solid 13.8 volts and no whine indicating the alternator is being over-worked...

I swapped one from a 2nd gen, was very easy. Found out later though that the bearings were shot so I wasted my time.
