Alternator interchangability?

I was told that an 82 alternator will not work correctly on an 85 and won't charge the battery, is this correct?

No It is not correct. 81-85 models are a direct plug in play. You can also run anything from the S4, S5, to the FD one on your car with minor modifications.
All of this information is available by searching.

S4 and S4 TII are direct bolt-in. S5 and up needs minor re-wiring.

the 79-80 are the only ones that wont work. they are externally regulated.
