Alternator ideas?

So the car has been running good, finally got the new wheels and tires. Went to go run an errand after work, and car is running good. I get it warm, and run it up to about 6-7k, shift to second, run it then cruise. About 1000 yds. later, I look down and the volt gauge is pegged at 16. Just put a 2g S4 alt. on and had been doing good, though had only gone on short trips.
I pull over, and check under the hood, don't know why. the alt was hot , but to me that is normal. maybe not. I head home about 2 mi. away. the car is getting a little warm, radiator waiting at home, so we get home. I pop the hood, alt is hot, but doesn't smell like burnt wires or anything, and the wire from the alt. is not warm. Also, it just didn't feel like it had the power it should.
I let it cool, come back, crank it, no probs, still doesn't rev like it should but it could have been cold and me just paranoid. Also, now the volt gauge is showing about 13-14V. Could it have damaged or even fried the leading igniter in that short of time, I wouldn't think the car would run like it did if the igniter was fubared. Maybe alt. reg going out?

If it shoots open to 16v then something is wrong, perhaps a diode. But then again I am no expert.

Alts tend to generate a little bit of heat, but should not be too hot to touch. Pegging the gauge is not a good sign. Overheating may be a sign of the belt being too tight, too loose, the pulley misaligned or the bearings on thier way out. Overcharging can indicate the ic regulator is failing or the battery is bad.

The alt body must ground to the engine block, then back to the battery through the negative cable. If you have done any painting, powdercoating coating ot polishing on the S4 alt, make sure it has a clean, corrosion free mounting surface on the ears where it meets the block.
