Alternator Bracket
I did a Stupid after Alternator Upgrade.
Friday I upgraded My 84GSL Alternator to a S5 Style, no problems with Wireing or Spacer issues (Thanks to all you Guru's).
Here is the issue!
Went thru my box of different Mounting Brackets to find one to be Painted i.e. no Rust easy to clean up and Paint.
Problem is that I Got Them All Mixed Up. Everthing from Smog Pumps to 80-85 Alternator Brackets.
They are from 6- 1st Gen's that I have owned in the past.
There are 2 that are simular in shape.
1- (7"s Long) Top Bolt = 1/2" Gap from Alternator to Bracket.
1- (8"s Long) Top Bolt = I would have to bend the top of it toward the front of the car to get the Alternator top bolt to Mate Up Properly.
I know that Mazda Changed the Alternator Bracket #'s from the 80 Model and later dates looking threw my FSM's.
I just need to know what size is the correct one for my 84???
7" or 8" Heellpp Meee?

The bracket must match the waterpump. S4 and S5 are longer because the bolt that holds it tot he waterpump (and engine) is a little lower. The earlier style is shorter and the bolt that holds it to the waterpump (only) is a little higher up. The alternators should be interchangeable regardless of the engine/waterpump combination — as long as the combination is correct.
The air pump bracket has a different shape and it shouldn't be too difficult to see the differences when compared to an alternator bracket.

Thankyou Thankyou!
Exactly what I needed to know.
(1) Tension Bracket was Shorter than the other and Curved alittle differently.
When I tried to install the shorter one I only had about a half inch left to tighten up the Belts i.e. (Higgi Dual Belt Pulley).
That is not how it looked before my Alternator Upgrade.
Nothing like starring @ 10 different Brackets and trying to figure out which one is supposed to work correctly
I usually mark all my spare parts so I know what goes where.
Thanks again.

Paint warning!
I lovingly powdercoated my Alt bracket, and after the install the alternator mysteriously stopped charging; rebuilt it, swapped it... nada! $75 and one hour with my mechanic:
-the bracket is the GROUND for the Alt - powdercoat cut the ground! 10¢ wire from back of alt to block fixed it. Nice looking bracket though .... ;p

Great Point Stu;
I made sure that I left the bottom of the Tension Bracket where it bolts to the Water Pump un-painted just for the Grounding Issue.
I'm running 6ea 1 Gauge Ground Straps all over the Engine Bay to Include 1 from that bolt directly to the Neg Side of Batt.
I've learned over the years that you cannot have enough Grounds for our 1st Gens.
Good Input! & Great Looking 80 you Got's There!
