Altenator pulley nut trick?

Trying to install my double alt pulley but can't get the old pulley nut off without turning. Does anyone have a trick to keep the pulley from turning? Any help is always appreciated.............................Thanks fellow rotorheads.

Yep, airtools. A nice impact wrench will work wonders. If you just getting the old one off and don't care about it, vise grips will hold in place while you get it off.

I just picked up a cheap impact wrench from walmart and it took it right off.

I like to take an old belt..put it in the pulley grove, then sorta hold onto the belt while I take the nut off.
I do have airtools, but this has worked out for me before so its worth a shot....

You can use a vice too, just wrap the pulley with some cardboard, leather or cloth to keep it from getting scatched, then clamp it in real tight. You need to be a little creative about just how to clamp it to accomodate the alternator and still get to the nut, but it can be done. Still, a good air driven impact wrench actually makes this job fun.

Thanks guys, I guess it's time to stop being lazy and get that heavy *** air compressor out of the shed and fire it up. It's funny how you forget about the simple things.....................................

lol, you actually HAVE air tools and didn't use them. That's classic.

And here I was reading this thread and thinking that I need to get myself some air tools because I don't even have them.

you dont need any air tools
put a screwdriver in the alternater to jam it from spinning too easy

I thought about putting a screw driver in there, but not for long. Seemed like a good way to screw things up (no pun meant). So I used the vice and then, when I got a compressor, I got happy.

quick question about the alternater pulley nut, is it reverse threaded or something? i have my alternater off and pulley wheel locked in a vice. when i turn it counter-clockwise, the fan and everything inside the alternater turns. I have air tools, yet dont wanna risk trying to tighten the nut in case its not reverse thread. im not too keen on putting a screwdriver into the alternater itself to stop the fan turning either. and ideas?...

Regular threads..lefty losey righty tighty.... buy an impact gun from Harbor Freight tools and it will be inexpensive and will help tremendously...

Same trick can be used on VW Bugs. There is a little cut out on the back pulley half. With the alt still on the screw driver plus belts keeps it pretty in steady
