Almost burn down me '83!
Holy Jesus! I had made a splice off of the battery 12v coming from the clock to the line leading to the dome light area. For some reason when I bought the vehicle this wasn't present. Somehow when I was putting the rear view mirror back in later on a positive got crossed with a neg, and instead of blowing a fuse burnt and melted most of the wiring involved over a period of a few hours! Getting back in the car I smelled something wierd at first then saw the bare crispy wire -holy Jesus! Again! Dodged a bullet on that one!

Im gonan type this in caps its a rule to LIVE by!
ANYTIME YOU RUN A WIRE TO A POSITIVE SOURCE SUCH AS THE BATTERY PUT A FUSE ON IT 6-10 INCHES FROM THE BATTERY OR THE (+) YOU ARE GOING TOO. IN THE EVENT OF A SHORT OR OVERLOAD THE ONLY THING CURRENT CAN DO IS TRY TO BURN THE WIRE IN 1/2 TO SHUT IT OFF... UNLESS YOU LIKE A VERY EXPENSIVE MARSHMELLOW ROAST ALWAYS USE A FUSE!

sorry to hear about your mishap , but it could have been a WHOLE LOT worse ...
take mike's advice!
what i don't understand, however, is what you said you doing. did you run the hot wire for the clock to the dome light??? and if so, what happened to the fuse? why didn't you just find the wire for the light? am i missing something?

Actually it was the battery lead coming off of the headlamp switch in the console. The dome lights take a 12v battery source, so I just spliced em up. I have no idea what happened to the original source for this power as the previous owner was even more of a hack than I am.
