Almost Back to Life : Help Needed

I'm trying to bring my 84 GS back to life. It's been sitting around for 2 years. I just installed the Racing Beat Holley setup. I know it's got spark, fuel, good compression....

It's coughing a lot like it wants to start. Getting it to amost catch. Smoke is coming out the back. I was going to buy new plugs tomorrow and try again, since the ones I"m using are old. Any other suggestions? What else should I look at?

Anyone have any suggestions or recommendations? All help would be appreciated.

Did you upgrade the fuel pump, add a fuel pressure regulator, change the fuel filter and add fresh gas? If you answer no to any of these questions, address them first.

If you haven't added fresh gas yet, drain the old fuel out before adding new. New plugs, wires, cap and rotor will help too.

The fuel pump is a holley. It's what the RB carb asks for and has a pressure regulator. The gas is still 2+ years old, so I guess that is where I'll start. I got about 1/2 tank. Should I just drain in all in a bucket and add more? How bad will old gas affect it?

Theres another thread on old gas right now too. Basically, it sucks. Gas thats over 2 years old could get gummy and clog things up. Drain it and clean out your fuel system. Get a new filter while you're at it. Then add some new gas and start her up.

If it works then you've got yourself a cheap and easy fix, if not then go for a more complete tune up.

use a bottle of sea foam.. add some to the engine oil and the rest in the tank. after change the fuel filter.. consider doing some of the mods on the forum like direct ignition, check the resistance of the coils, make sure there are no leaks around the carb(gaskets), make sure you adjusted the omp correctly.. is the carb that comes from racing beat preadjusted??

Don't even try running that gas through your new carb, drain it and add fresh.

Install a new fuel filter after the gas is drained.

At this point in time, I am not conviced about putting Seafoam in the oil, unless it is done immediately prior to a short warm up run to do an oil AND filter change.

I think it will start with the gas thats in it. I started a car that sat longer than two years. I think pouring a bit of oil down the carb should do it. If it seems like it wants to start and your getting spark than check your timing, recheck the plugs and if all is good she should fire right up. Than once its started you can do everything else that was suggested (gas filter, fresh gas etc.)

Also since the carb was installed recently make sure the manifold is on securely, no vacuum leaks anywhere.

Update:

Drained the fuel into two buckets and put new fresh fuel in. The old stuff looked like crap (see below). Couldn't get new plugs, they were ordered and will be here tomorrow.

No Vacuum leaks on the carb/manifold. The carb was bought off this forum and recently ran on a stock port 12A like mine. I've made no changes to it. Getting good spark. Got compression. Coughing hard and continues to roll over like it's going ot start but doesn't. The header feels hot like I have ignition and combustion and I'm getting lots of white smoke out the back. Just continues to cough.

I'll try with fresh new plugs tomorrow, but aside from that, I need help. Any other suggestions??? Please help! I really want to get her running again!

Holy cow that gas!?!?!?!

Try push/tow starting it if it's that close to starting.

The whole point of fresh fuel is not to f...up the new carb. Sure, it may start with the old fuel, but why gum up a good carb, only to have to take it off and go through it to clean all the s..t out of it. Use some common sense before you post. A little oil down the carb may help build compression since the engine has sat that long and the housing are probably dry.

After seeing the pic of his gas, he may have trouble already.

Make sure you have a fresh fuel filter, plugs, fully charged battery and check your timing. If the exhaust manifold is getting hot without starting, the timing may be off.

White smoke eh? Might have a coolant leak. Most likely source would be the orings in the intake manifold on a stock setup, but I'm not sure about the one that you are using.

dude check it out, ive done this so many times it would freak you out. ive owned 19 of these 1st gens, first thing you do is, drop that gas tank! its ful of tan and red **** i garentee it.take it and flush it and keep flushing it till you see pure metal at the bottom. then clean out your sendig unit, the thing that sucks the gas up the tubes on top of tank oval shaped with about 6 screws in it, be sure to plug the white plug back in thats your fuel gauge, after thats all done like the other guys said fuel filter is your main thing after all that ****,then you should put fresh fuel in an start.ive done this after a 1st gen sat for 10 years qnd it ran like a beast........good luck, youll be ok just keep trying, maybe a push start with another car behind you, pop the clutch at about 20 miles an hr and hit the gas alittle bit and bam............
