Air Pump removal - GSLSE

I would like to remove the Air Pump, air valve and stock manifold to make way for a Racing Beat Header w/O2 sensor. I hear that this shouldn’t effect the operation of the EGI system. Could someone please tell me what to remove, and what needs to be plugged up? Do I have to make a block off plate? Is it fairly straightforward?

I would like some of your views before that start unbolting things this weekend. Thanks!

I'm eager to see what everyone elso took off, because I'm sure I missed some stuff.

I added a RB street port exhaust (two presilencers) last year.

Removed the air pump, the muffler (attached to AP by a hose on the lower front portion), and plugged the hole in the air box that had another hose running to the AP). Also removed the ACV and put the Mazdatrix block-off plate on the hole.

I think that's it.

Take care,

I first want to apologize for my lack of knowledge on this subject, sorry.

Now that that’s done, why do you pull the air pump? Is it strictly to open up space, or is there a performance benefit from pulling it off? Have seen similar posts, but haven’t seen a reason why folks pull them. I appreciate your help!

No need to apologize. We aren't born with this knowledge.

Well, if you have no cats, there is nothing that requires pumping air to them. The emissions system pumps air from the air pump to the cats to help clean up emissions by introducing a little clean air. If you don't remove the air pump, you will simply be pumping air into the air.

The only actual non-space-saving performance advantage is that you will lose (estimated, although I probably could dig out the parts and weigh them) about 20 lbs just in the gear I mentioned above.

Performance rule #1: We need more power Scotty!
Performance rule #2: Put your car on the "Sweatin' to the Oldies" or"SlimFast" program.

This exhaust mod does a bit of both.

Take care,

POS,
in my case I need to remove the pump to create more space. This -SE engine is destined for a non-RX7 project car(see picture on left), and will be smog exempt due to the age of the car (if I don't get caught). Law states year of car or year of engine, whichever is later.

But I do plan on installing a Random tech high flow cat. The universal is about the same price as a RB presilencer, and would do a much better job of cleaning the air. Plus these new cats don't require the added air. Maybe it won't run as clean....but it sure will be cleaner than the 35 year old 4 banger that I'm chucking. 56 stock HP!!!

Since one here seems to have a problem after removing the port actuator, I'll remove them to simplify the install. The sensing pipe is just one more thing I don't need to plumb. Plus the slight loss of low RPM torque may actually help me keep the tires on the road. But after running the -SE around the nieghborhood last weekend, admittedly, we don't spend much time below 3K RPM.

NOTA V6,
you are the first one to ever mention a block off plate. Hummm, I wonder what else I'm not considering???

If you are emissions exempt, why run a cat at all? Cats provide more back pressure and hence less power.

Clean shmean. If the FDA and PCAs were serious about emission cleanliness, you wouldn't see semi tractors and busses blowing large clouds of black smoke. When I see the government get SERIOUS about envirenmental concerns in auto emissions, I will follow suit. Until then, I do not plan on conforming to a set of rules that discrimanates against passenger cars, but not against large corporations that are abviously polluting WAAAAYYYY more than the 2000 miles per year I put on my "no emissions gear" GSL-SE.

Hey, I do recycle everything that I can though.

If you buy the RB presilencers, you can have them put in the sensing tube. Comes with the system.

Try stickier tires. More torque is good. Mazda put those actuators on there for a reason. Doesn't the RENISIS have them too?

I was wondering that myself. I have yet to see a "they quit emissions testing, what can I safely remove" manual. Anyone?

NOTA,
the Random cats are actually higher flowing than a straight pipe in some tests. So what back pressure are you talking about? And some of the bad rap that Cats have had over the years is simply old school thought now. A little reading on this changed my view 180.

I know what you mean about how f*ck up this situation seems. I don't want to get into the politics or science of emissions with you. But I assure you that I'm not some GREEN dude trying to do my tree hugging part to clean up the environment. I SHOULD be more against auto emissions than I am. I remember growing up in the days when after playing outside for a while in the summer, I'd have to collapse on the floor, CRYING from pain in lungs, eyes watering from smog, not being able to breath. YES, it was that bad here in So. Cal. And it is way better now.

This car is a convertable (don't own top), and I just don't want to smell my car while idling at long stops. What's so bad about that?

I'm not trying to pass smog, nor am I concerned about being the cleanest I can be. But I don't think it is unreasonable or UNCOOL to put a really well made high flow catalytic converter on the car.

Everytime I pull up behind an old classic the first thing that comes to mind is, "WHAT A COOL CAR!" The next thing I do is pass up the SOB because I get tired of smelling his emisisons.

I will have more power than I can handle in this car. RX-Midget has the same engine in a similar car with 225 race slicks and he has trouble maintaining grip off the line. So I can afford to lose the port actuators. Don't worry about me.

Please don't take offense to anything I've said. We're likely approching this from differnect angles. I just wanted to clarify where I'm coming from with all this emissions removal stuff.

Good motoring!

'scool. I just didn't understand the logic, that's all.

I still don't understand how any kind of container that is wider than the exhuast system piping, especially containing any kind of baffling or filtering material, is going to be higher flow than a straight pipe. Even a pipe opening into a open space (for conversation's sake, we use a coffee can) and closing back down to the same diameter it was before the open space would cause enough turbulance to decrease the flow however fractionally.

Can you point me to an URL or two that would clarify this to me?

I understand about the exhaust smell thing, but I would rather have the extra power, and try not to sit still myself.

Take care,
