Air Pump Removal...Dangerous?

About 2 months ago I took out my my air pump to make way for my new carb. I was sifting through parts today and I saw the air pump. One thing i didnt notice before is the warning that says "DO NOT REMOVE" and then "NO OIL". Now I have been driving with it like this for quite some time. No long drives...(10 min max). I wanted to know if this is something that HAS to go back in or not. I failed on inspection in part due to the lack of the "air injection". I thoght all it did was help in pulling exhaust from the headers, but im probably wrong. Anyway any information would be helpful. Thanks. ~Tim

Air pump puts good air into exhaust to help you pass inspection, plenty of people remove it...I didnt know it had anything to do with oil though o_O

no oil as in you don't put oil in it, oil in your air pump won't help you pass the smog test thats for sure...

btw the airpump does sweet FA it says do not remove becuse mazda probly didn't want thier customers voiding thier waranty/ability to pass smog test.

You definately wont pass without it on the stock cats,

if you put on teh aftermarket high flow ones that dont require air pumped into them, you may pass that way.

Kepp in mind that running the stock cats, without the airpump, shortens thier life. If they weren't dead already.

The air pump pumps air into the catalytic converters to help them finish combusting/converting the exhaust and leftover fuel into something that can pass the e-test.

If you live in a place with emissions, you need the air pump, the catalytic converters, and all the emissions devices on the carb in order to pass emissions.

You said "new carb". Can you give us any details? If it's anything like my carb, it's not emissions friendly!

Yea,HIGHLY unlikely your gonna pass any smog test with that carb.
Simply plumbing the airpump into a good main cat M I G H T get you by a smog test.It totally depends on how tight the emissions testing is in your area.Definatly dont leave it hooked up that way, since the the cat will go nuclear from all the oxygen going in full time.
Rotaries already are super hot in the exhaust department when left alone.Unhooking the pump disrupts the smog system's ability to regulate the exhaust system temp,and thus,smog control...(especially on 79-80s)
You can burn your car to the ground,blow your engine from "clogged-cat" backpressure and start some serious grass fires if you remove the air plump without also removing the cats.

Air pump supplies oxygen to the cat(s), necessary to break down exhaust into relatively inert gases.

2NO => N2 + O2 or 2NO2 => N2 + 2O2

2CO + O2 => 2CO2
