Reinstalling the air pump. All the pics I can find online show the C shaped spacer at the hex end of the mounting bolt, between the air pump and it’s mount on the water pump. However there is a split sleeve sticking out maybe 1/16 of an inch and it’s a larger diameter than the inside of the C shaped spacer so the spacer will not slide in to place. Tried driving the split sleeve into its hole but it’s not moving. All the parts are original to the engine so know they go together some way. Do I have the spacer in the wrong place? Should it be at the other end of the bolt, nearer to its threaded tip instead of nearer to the hex head. Thanks!

I do not have an answer for you, but at least now I know where that thing came from. I found it on the floor of the garage last year and didn't know what the heck it was. Thank you and good luck.

The C-shaped spacer on the air pump on my 85 is between the rear ear on the air pump and the water pump housing. If the sleeve is stuck in place and will not move, maybe file the protruding part of the sleeve down so that the spacer is easier to install. Its a tight fit either way.
