Someone said that removing the air pump was a horrible idea, what are the worst things that could happen?

The haynes manual says----

The air injection system consists of the air pump and a check valve. under certain engine conditions, the system injects air into the thermal reactor and at other times the air is pumped through the injectors into the exhaust ports.

Sooo....I don't need it? is there anything I have to do to compesate for the loss of the air pump. (Besides striping the cats? I looked for a thread on this but couldn't find one. Is it easy to take off? and I guess I should yank the rats nest out at the same time huh?

On your '84 the air pump injects air into your cats for a complete burn of the exhaust. This also allows for the conversion of the more harmful elements of the exhaust to something more "clean". If you remove your pump you should either gut your cats or replace them with a straight pipe. This will free up a few ponies as well as improving mileage slightly.
Go to mazspeed.com for a complete tutorial on how to do the rat's nest removal.

If you still have cats, you should keep the air pump on and the emissions operating.
