Air into cat (GSL SE)

Any easy way to verify if my catalytic converter is getting air from the ACV? Is is supposed to receive fresh air during idle, or only while decelerating?

The pump should be pumping air into it all the time I thought. One way to tell if the cats are working is to see if the cat is really hot compared to the exhaust pipe behind it. If cat is considerably hotter than pipe after, it is clogged.

Yea, get a new one unless you don't have to worry about smog inspection. Seeing how you live in California, you need to buy a new one.

I'm not sure its suppose to pump air to the cat all the time, there is a valve that controls the flow, the acv. If it did the cat would get too hot.

Is it likely that other exhaust components might get clogged instead of the cat?

The cats have a honeycomb structure inside, the rest of the exhaust doesn't really have anything to get clogged up. Do you have more than one cat? my car had 3.

TurboFB, there could be another reason your exhaust glowing, too much air caused by bad or no acv, a lean or rich condition? Do a search.

I just have 1 (Bonez). Before I think about replacing it, I just wanna make sure that it's receiving air through the split air pipe.

Jose: Just run through the checking proceedure in 4B of the FSM (I would to the checks from page 28 to page 37). This will check both the ACV and the switching solenoid which is responsible for controlling the ACV injection into the main cat. I would go ahead and check the relief solenoid as well (This is also in that section). This one controls how much of the air from the air pump is dumped back into the atmosphere. Both of these solenoids are located on the firewall. Did you get a replacement ACV from AltantaRx7 yet, or are you just testing your old one?

Good luck.

air is pumped into the exhaust manifold at idle up to about 2500rpm +/-250rpm. after that its vented back to the air cleaner. it goes to the cat on decel/light cruise
