Air Intake
One main reason to consider as to why stock intakes are designed the way they are is to reduce noise.
Remove the black plastic funnel off the blue aircleaner on the 12A cars... NOISE.
Remove the black rubber connector from the GSL-SE airbox... NOISE.
Aftermarket filter system on an RX-8... LOUD NOISE.
Same goes for funnel intakes on cars that don't have an AFM like a Honda Civic... NOISY.
It doesn't matter what shape or design is as long as it is open, it will be louder than stock.
But to us aftermarket tuner-types who want to extract the most out of our cars, we welcome such noises.
Using the same analogy, my SE breaths cold air not through one or both nostrils, but though a wide open mouth

At least in my solution, the 'straw' is pointed at the front of the car toward the incoming air, and I'd put my one-cold-nostril up against your two-hot-nostrils in any uphill fat chick hauling contest in my home state.
You up for that? Well,... are you?
