Air Filter/Vaccum line

Ok so this being a new car.. to me and being my first car i have no idea what the hell is going on... here are the pictures...

I tried starting it with the duct tape over the hole and with it off the hole and it ran way better with the tape over the hole. It made hella weird noises with out it. And killed one time once it was already warmed up at like 1500 rpms

Duct Tape

In the owners manual it said something about plugging the mettalic thing i think it's the idel compensator or something... if you run the car without using the air filter..???

Vaccum Line

THIS Is the line that is connected to the hole that is plugged.

That is all emissions stuff. You can remove it. Look in the FAQ for rats nest removal.

why would you run your car with out your air filter? That's why the hole is plugged according to the owners manual?

That big hose is the shutter valve hose. It's a worthless pile of crap, and I just took mine off. If you look at your rat's nest the last picture, just above the shutter valve in the pic, you've got a vacuum leak with that small metal line. Plug that.

Sounds like your shutter valve is dead by the weird noises BTW. Just take a bolt and stick it in the tube with a hose clamp. And keep that hole plugged in your air cleaner, and never run the thing without an air filter.

the metal tube your talking about is the one on top of the shutter valve hose?

How do you know it leaks?

and where is the shutter valve in the picture?

thanks for putting up with me lol

No, if you look in the picture, you'll see a metal tube next to the shutter valve hose that has no hose on it. This will cause a vacuum leak. To find the shutter valve, follow that big black hose in the picture to the carb. The shutter valve is attached to the carb.

Just follow the large vaccum hose highlighted on this pic, and there is a vaccuum diaphram that connects and activates your shutter valve. The shutter valve is actually inside your intake manifold. Just ignore it, it doesnt hurt your engine any. Just put a large bolt inside this hose and clamp it down tight. Then cap off the metal tube under your air cleaner assembly that used to connect to this hose.

If I remember right the vac line lovintha7 is talking about goes directly into the air cleaner assembly, but It wouldnt hurt to make sure. I traced it in this pic.

an even brighter idea, Scrap the whole stock intake and emissions, and go with a sterling carb, Weber, or Holley. Saves so much time, and looks a ton better too. Definately do a rats nest removal....heres a link to the tutorial.....
http://maz_tutorials.ten15.net/Tutorial_1_print.pdf

WAIT! do you have emissions laws? if so do not do the removal........but if you dont scrap that junk......
